My question is for Fallenchemist or Jym. As far as the DHS scholarship goes. Do you think they take into consideration the state the student is from. The purpose for offering these scholarships is to get the students to attend the school. As I mentioned another time, we are in fl,and some of our state schools are on par with Tulane in ranking. UF is very close. I know ranking isnt everything but kids and parents do pay attention to them… And because they rank high, and are so affordable(my daughter will get free tuition because of her grades, scores etc, and has been offered additional merit money) it makes it very difficult to justify paying private tuition. Does the DHS selection committee take this kind of dilemma into consideration? My D did get the Pres Scholarship but judging from the infomation here, I would say it was close. She very much wants Tulane and of course I want her to have Tulane but Im not all that confident of her getting the DHS. Any thoughts?

My opinion is that they would not take that into account. If they started trying to figure out every angle like that, they would be paralyzed. Plus I think they really do take the DHS very seriously as a pure merit competition. Besides, many of us think the rankings are fairly meaningless, and I suspect so does the Tulane administration. That isn’t to say we all don’t recognize the reality of their existence and the impact they have sometimes (although more and more people are realizing how flawed they are, and how commercial the motivations are), but the Tulane experience and the UF experience are very different things. Not better or worse, just different.

I totally get where you are coming from regarding the value proposition. Let’s say $25,000 is what she gets. Is Tulane worth $15,000 or so more per year than Florida? For many yes, and for many no, and for very different reasons sometimes. Only you all as a family can decide that. It is a lot of money. Trust me, I thank Tulane every day for that DHS. We would have had the same difficult decision you are facing otherwise. There are no magic words or formulas, just a lot of introspection and hoping.

I kinda had that gut feeling also. I was just looking at an older thread on this subject from another year. Very clever kids out there. Thanks for all your help Fallenchemist. Time will tell.

I cannot think if any harm, I just wonder if there is some reason I am overlooking before they actually look at them all. People within Tulane admissions do look at this site, as well as some others within the administration. I found that out as a certainty during move-in weekend this year. So maybe having people comment on here could subtly influence people that will be looking at them later? Maybe it is really nothing, but there is a lot at stake for everyone trying for it.

That is a good point, FC; I hadn’t thought of that. I suppose we’ll be able to share shortly anyway; decisions do come out next month, don’t they?

Hello everyone. I just got home ans saw this thread. My impression is the same as fc’s. I do not know for sure, but my guess is that the DHS is not used to recruit from different areas, but it is used to recruit the top students, regardless of their locale.

*** edit-- I recall going to an admitted students event the spring of my DS’s senior year and there were 3 DHS winners there. So I dont think locale matters.
