Dean's List and Magna Cum Laude

I'm curious. What are the graduation requirements for cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude at your College? What does it take for Dean's list?

Here at UPenn:

3.4 for cum laude
3.6 for magna cum laude (my goal)
3.8 for summa cum laude

and 3.7 in the Academic Year (both semesters) for Dean's List

hot damn 3.7?
Can you say grade inflation? hahaha.
Dean's list here is a 3.0 and the latin honors are the same.
I go to Wake Forest.

Dang your schools are easy! I'm so jealous...

At UCSD:

Cum Laude: 3.648
Magna Cum Laude: 3.790
Summa Cum Laude: 3.911

And to get Provost's Honors (which is equivalent to Dean's List) you must make at least 3.5 in any given quarter.

I kind of wish I went to a private school now. But I wonder if it is truly worth double the tuition cost?

Chessdude, what is the average GPA at UCSD?
Our average GPA is a 2.8 lol and the average freshman GPA is a 2.4...
All of that stuff is relative anyway, so it means that it is simply easier to make grades at UCSD...

Texas A&M:

Cum laude: 3.5
Magna Cum Laude: 3.7
Summa Cum laude: 3.9

Dean's List: 3.75 for a semester with 15 hrs taken

It doesn't necessarily mean that the school is easier. The school could have tougher classes, and the lower requirement are simply to compensate for that. It's not surprising that UPenn's requirements are what they are.

UCLA:

CUM LAUDE: 3.638 min. overall GPA
MAGNA CUM LAUDE: 3.769 min. overall GPA
SUMMA CUM LAUDE: 3.862 min. overall GPA

3.5 for Dean's List, which is awarded each quarter

USC:

3.5 for cum laude
3.7 for magna cum laude
3.9 for summa cum laude

3.5 semester GPA for dean's list, on at least 12 units of letter grades.

Here, it's the same as what you said 3.4, 3.6, 3.8 respectively. Dean's list is, in general, 3.4 as well, but each individual college in the university sets their own (it just has to be at least 3.4). In my college it's like, 3.6 and at least 14 hours. Which sounds like it'd be easy but um yeah, so not. I'm struggling to pull a 3.0 right now.

At Frostburg State

Cum Laude: 3.40
Magna Cum Laude: 3.65
Summa Cum Laude: 3.90

3.4 to get on the Dean's List carrying at least 12 credit hours.

My school isn't exactly the best out there academically, so I like that it takes a 3.4 to get any kind of recognition. It limits the amount of undue credit that goes to those who skated by on luck and settle for mediocrity. Those who get a 3.4 or better generally go the extra mile for it.

Business School, a 3.25 GPA for Dean's List
Arts and Sciences, 3.5 GPA for Dean's List
To graduate with Honors, a 3.5 GPA plus a Honors Thesis
Magna Cum Laude: 3.75
Summa Cum Laude: 3.85 with Thesis
Business school: Summa Cum Laude is 3.90 without Thesis

chessdude: much more likely that ucsd has grade inflation than that upenn is "easy". not that upenn won't have some grade inflation of its own.

Cum Laude 3.500-3.699
Magna Cum Laude 3.700-3.899
Summa Cum Laude 3.900-4.000

Says 3.6 with at least 12 credits during a term for Dean's List, but I'm pretty sure I got it a few times with 3.5-something so maybe they changed it recently. I wish I went to a 3.4 school because that's what I'll probably end up with...damn studio art classes. :(

Cum Laude: 3.4
Magna Cum Laude: 3.6
Summa Cum Laude: 3.8

Dean's list is 3.5 with at least 12 hours, awarded each semester. They just bumped it up from 3.25 a year ago. My school does have a President's Honor Roll if you get a 4.0 in a semester.

At Oklahoma City University:

Awarded at graduation:
Cum Laude - 3.50 (with at least 60 hrs at OCU)
Magna Cum Laude - 3.75 (with at least 60 hrs at OCU)
Summa Cum Laude - 3.90 (with at least 80 hrs at OCU)

Awarded each semester:
President's Honor Roll - 3.90+ with 12 hrs/semester
Vice President's Honor Roll - 3.75-3.89 with 12 hrs/semester
Dean's Honor Roll - 3.50-3.74 with 12 hrs/semester

Your school has different honor rolls? Hmm, interesting.

Yeah. It doesn't seem that weird to me. It's kind of like the different "cum laude" levels, except it happens every semester. I was on president's honor roll for last semester! :)

Cornell University

Dean's List 3.4
Cum Laude 3.5
Magna Cum Laude 3.75
Summa Cum Laude 4.0

That 4.0 is a toughie.

How many people get 4.0?

Dean's list here is a 3.0 with no grades below a C+. All the higher honors come with a 3.5 or higher. There is an award for seniors who get a 4.0. There were literally just 2 of those this year. Engineering is hard!

Lately it has been 3.675 for Dean's List and 3.925 for distinction.
