Does anyone remember when those generally come out? I was away all last summer and thus have no idea when I actually got an email about it. June? July?
Thanks

Hi!
Last year it was 6/22…we got one letter informing us both about dean’s list and fgs. However, when Pres Christ came to Senate she said that fgs as a designation was being eliminated and the Dean’s list was getting more selective. Not sure why

The code for the Dean and Faculty says the Dean’s List is made up of students with a GPA of 3.3333 or higher. Is this going to be changed, do you know?

She said it was but I don’t have details. Sorry :(

I actually do know that one. They are changing to Dean’s list to top 25% of class (so GPA would change, IIRC, Provost Shuster said 3.7 would do it normally), but that is only affecting class of 2016 and younger, once again, IIRC

I checked on Bannerweb a few days ago and it said on my transcript that I made Dean’s List for 2011-2012. I didn’t get an email or anything, though.

Are these based on our overall gpa or the gpa for that specific year (the two semesters)? Typically, what would be the gpa cutoff for first group scholars?

vanilla92 - They’re based on your GPA for the past school year. I remember reading that the cutoff for First Group Scholars is the top 10% of each class. I’m not sure what the GPA for that would be though.

Here’s an older thread that has more information: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/smith-college/982755-deans-list-first-group-scholars.html

According to a faculty action sheet that I found on Smith’s website, the First Group Scholars have been eliminated and the criteria for Dean’s List has been revised. But this sheet does not say how the criteria has changed.

My understanding is the changes take effect with the incoming class of 2016.

Thanks treefingers.

Can anyone link me to the information about the changes taking effect? Or does it not affect the class of 2015 and the classes above?

This does not address whether it affects everyone or just Class of 2016 going forward. I saw that somewhere so I will try to find it.

I got my letter today. It said that Dean’s List is a GPA of 3.33 or above, and I also made First Group Scholars but they didn’t specify what the cutoff was for that.

I’m class of 2015 by the way so they must not have eliminated First Group Scholars for us.

First group scholar roughly correlates to the top 10% of the class, but it is not calculated that way. If you have 28 credits of A/A- and at least 32 graded credits for the year, you are a first group scholar. Also, I am pretty sure you cannot have any grades below B or B-.

Daughter got Dean’s List/First Group letter on Friday (the 13th!).

What’s the dean’s list? :O

It’s a recognition for academic achievement. Unlike most schools Smith gives it out only once a year. You need to be enrolled in a minimum number of courses and achieve a 3.33 GPA. There are some other caveats but basically that’s how it goes.

Dean’s List is a method that positively reinforces academic achievement for students. Each college or university sets its’ own academic standards-- it’s a local policy. Dean’s List gives students something academically to shoot for. This is good in my mind. Generally it is GPA based.

Apparently, Smith has recently modified its’ criteria for achieving Dean’s List recognition. The faculty may have upped the standard somewhat-- I recall minutes to this effect from a major faculty academic committee. I noticed this nosing around on the Smith web site.
