Dean's List Notification

My daughter was just notified that she made the Dean's list for Fall 2010 and I am bursting with pride. Does anyone know how this notification gets into local newspapers? Does Cornell ask for the name of a student's local newspaper when accepted and send the notice automatically or does my daughter needs to submit the Dean’s List Certificate to my local paper?

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks.

I don’t have an answer to your question, but what college is your daughter in and how did she find out? I know I met the requirements for Dean’s List, but I haven’t gotten any sort of notification yet.

CALS and she received an e-mail yesterday.

Dean’s List notification shows up on your transcript. Each school has a different policy for notification. For example, College of Engineering notifies almost six weeks after the start of following semester. Other than that, there is no additional announcement or publicity. Although, if you belong to certain clubs they might honor with a small trophy at year end events.

Hard to believe no one can answer this… I figured someone from CC would have made the Dean’s list.

I can’t say that I have ever seen a notification in our paper for anyone making the Dean’s list. I mean, imagine how many parents in your area have kids at colleges that make the dean’s list every semester. That would probably be an awful lot of notices.

Having said that. Congrats to your daughter on the achievement. My daughter would love to be on the dean’s list, but alas you need a 3.7 in humec to do that and although she came within .04 of it this semester, Orgo was just enough to keep her off the list.

They do it here, but it’s usually for the local trade schools and community colleges.

I got mine about 15 days after I got all my final grades last semester (i.e. June 10th)…seems to be a bit overdue this semester since I haven’t gotten it yet. I was in Arts and Sciences this semester, but just transferred schools at Cornell.

I’m pretty sure Cornell does not ask for local newspapers that you want your son/daughter to be recognized in. That would be a nightmare. I’ve made the Dean’s List every semester but my name has never been in the paper. You should contact your local paper to see what you need to do because I’m almost certain Cornell does not take the responsibility to notify the thousands of newspapers across the country.

Plenty of people make the Dean’s List every semester, and I’m sure many on CC do, too. Personally, I just never thought it was that big of a deal.

@joeuhc, There are plenty of people who get on Dean’s list both on cc and those who do not get on cc. As I said, Cornell makes a notation on your transcript. Other than that there is no fanfare. Also, if you belong to certain clubs they might recognize you at year end events. As sasari said it is good to be on Dean’s list than not but it is no big deal.

Hope this helps.

I don’t think it’s common to have Dean’s list awards listed in local newspapers.

My local newspaper must be uncommon because I regularly see Dean’s list notifications for college students in my area.

What isn’t uncommon is that other colleges submit notifications to local newspapers for students that made the Dean’s list. This is based on a Google search “dean’s list notifications in newspapers”.

My daughter was notified during the winter break and she is in A&S. She was asked to pick up her certificate at some office. She asked me if I wanted her to send it to me. I told her to fax it. She didn´t appreciate that. I don´t think she would want her name mentioned in any of our local paper about making the dean´s list.

That’s odd. I’m in A&S and was never notified. I don’t think the Dean’s List merits excessive self-congratulation, but I do hope the record reflects it at the very least.

A far as I was told by D2,they didn’t offer to notify any newspaper, just pick up some certificate if you want.

Just as well, it’s not common around here to put that kind of notice in our local newspaper, for a school like this.

It is noted on the transcript.

I’m in A&S too and was never notified. I’m pretty sure I met all the requirements too. Odd

Here are the Dean’s List requirements for each school.

I have never put my kids names in the newspaper for making the Dean’s list. I think they would be mortified if I did that. Have you asked your daughter if she would mind?

I must say I am shocked at these responses. It’s either making the Dean’s list is not a big deal or it’s some sort of embarrassment that no one should know about.

I must live in a very strange part of the country because I often see notices in my local newspaper about students making the Dean’s list at various colleges. And people I talk to don’t seem appalled by these notices rather they find them interesting and they are proud to know fellow residents are doing well since some people may consider making the Dean’s list an indication of doing well.

I frequently attend Cornell events both at Cornell and in Syracuse which has a large alumni population. I am not an alum but Cornell has always welcomed me to these events since Cornell has told me they consider me part of the Cornell family. I am definitely going to mention this Dean’s list issue.

This is my feeling about it, in this community, others are free to feel differently, in theirs.

“It’s either making the Dean’s list is not a big deal”
IMO, that. Some deal, nice job, but not a big deal, certainly not a newsworthy event. Nice that they did well but they didn’t cure cancer. But then boasting about it as if they did, a little “nouveau gauche”, IMO.

" or it’s some sort of embarrassment that no one should know about."
Not that. Something to be happy about, but not to boast about, IMO. Family should know. Be sure to tell grandma. Not the newspaper though.

Sort of like the Patriot’s players’ reaction to the extent of the Jets players’ celebration after their win. “It was a lot of classless play on the football field after the game,…”… "“You can tell they’re not used to being in this position.” "

Since it’s not normally done here, for Ivy school students, I feel like it would be looked at this way, by some, if I posted it. A little tacky, classless, inappropriately boastful. More probably nobody would read it though, I guess.

The way I see it, boasting that your kid made dean’s list at an Ivy league school is a subtle dig at all the other readers whose kid isn’t attending an ivy league school and didn’t make dean’s list either. Even if that’s not the intent.
