Dean's List Publication

A 3.5 GPA gets me a position on the Dean's List, which I would like to put on my resume. This semester I will be on the Dean's List (I'm still waiting on one more grade, but I'm pretty sure), and I am wondering when I can put this on my resume, because I want to start sending it out soon. Can I put it on as soon as my grades come in and I have a 3.5, or do I have to wait until the Dean's List is actually published?

Once your grades are officially posted, if you click on unofficial transcript on Wolverine Access it will say what honors you have. I think then it is for real, and ok to put on your resume.

When will grades be officially posted? I have all my grades up, but it doesn’t say I’m on the dean’s list :frowning:

Also, does U of M mail everyone a copy of their transcript every semester? Or do you have to order 1 (so I can have one to show my parents).

Yosup, transcripts are free, but you do have to order them yourself (you can order as many as you want). Go to Wolverineaccess.umich.edu -> student business, then look for the “order transcript” link under the “academic records” heading (it’s in the middle of the page near the bottom, or you can just control+f find it). You should be able to take it from there.

is dean list’s worth putting? how would one put it if one has consecutive 3.5+s?

Ok thanks pancakes!

Personally, I wouldn’t put Dean’s list on your resume unless your transcript currently states so. If an interviewer has a copy of your transcript and your resume side by side and notices the difference, what can you really say? I don’t think ‘I expect to have it’ is a good excuse for putting it on. Just wait a bit to do so.

Also, on my resume I just have:

College of Engineering Dean’s List – Dec 08, Apr 09, Dec 09, Apr 10
as my consecutive listing of awards

J89, it will say it as soon as I get the grade for that last class, right? I don’t have to wait until half-way into the winter, do I?

^sorry, I don’t think it comes out immediately. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I don’t think I’ve ever noticed when it went up, rather only that it was on my transcript.

Hmmm… If I send my resume out with “College of Engineering Dean’s List - Fall '10” on it, and the Fall '10 Dean’s List isn’t out, couldn’t I just tell them I will be on it due to my GPA? Either way, they won’t see my transcript until I send it to them, which would presumably come much later. (Right? Honestly, I have no idea how this works.) And by then it should be updated. And even if it’s not, it’s not bad to say I will be on the Dean’s List because of my GPA.

Dean’s List at Michigan is only for engineering students, correct? What honors are there for LSA or business students?

Vladenschlutte, are you planning to apply for internships (i.e. send out your resumes)?
If so, I would go ahead and right it in. It should be fine. But if it was for an interview you’ve already secured had that’s coming within the next month I wouldn’t.

umich2 - For all university students including LSA, you are given a “University Honors” statement on your transcript if your gpa is higher than, I believe, a 3.5.

Just curious (not trying to be disrespectful to anyone), but would having the dean’s list on your resume even help that much? It’s just a list of people who got a certain GPA (kinda like high honors in high school), and you’ll obviously have your GPA listed on your resume anyways so they’ll see that you have a 3.5+

Well Yosup, this (meaning Fall '10) is actually my 2nd semester, and the first one I didn’t have a 3.5. I will still be under a 3.5 cumulative.

I think there’s a nice touch to your resume adding awards because it distinguishes you from others.

It’s probably fine to leave on if you don’t have much work experience, but I would take it off once you get some, unless you’re still at about a page.

Ok cool, and if we’re engineering students, if we’re on the dean’s list, will we also have University Honors on our transcript? Or is it 1 or the other?

There is a separate Engineering Latin Honors which is separate from the Dean’s List. 3.2 is Cum Laude, 3.5 is Magna Cum Laude, 3.75 is Summa Cum Laude.

^ True, but isn’t there something else called University honors? The thing that j89 was talking about, could we put both Dean’s list and Univ. Honors on our resume?

you are not allowed to put latin honors on gpa until after you graduate.

For resume, just put Cumulative GPA: 3.70 (Dean’s List Honors)

You dont even have to specify which term…it’s technically not incorrect since you have been awarded dean’s list and you didnt specify which term
