I'm thinking about applying to the Dean's Scholars program and I have a few questions.

How hard is the Dean's Scholar program (or the Plan 2 program)?
like compared to AP or normal college courses
How much more work is it?
What are the pros and cons of it?
What do they look for when choosing people for the program?
Who would you recommend it to?

I would also like some feedback on the Dean's program and Plan II. Both seem to be extremely competitive. I believe there are only 30 students in the Dean's program and a few hundred in Plan II. Does anyone know what either program is looking for in terms of credentials for admissions? What makes the difference? Is it test scores, essays, ec's, or everything thrown together?

As I understand it, it is theoretically possible to do both plan II and the Dean's program by double majoring. Has anyone out there tried to do that?

hey. cami215, it's definitely possible to double major in ds and plan ii (i myself is an example and i know a few other freshmen who are also doing it). just from my 2 months of college experience, i can honestly say that i truly do enjoy both programs, esp ds. it's so small that all the first-year deans scholars in similar majors basically take all the same classes all day. i really can't imagine how much harder it would be for me to adjust to college life without having been provided all these opportunities to study/play/party with those amazingly intelligent/hard working ppl who share some of the same interests and passions that i do.
sorry, if i'm being really incoherent..just stayed up 'till 3 in the morning (walking around on 6th street and watching a movie with some ds friends..lol. yea, i think you can see my point)

Thanks for that link. That looks encouraging because son's credentials do seem to match up well with those listed for Plan II. Of course, you can never tell. But at least he seems to be within the ballpark.

yy0712,

Sounds as if you are having a great time, academically and otherwise! Just curious, but what is your major? son is interested in biology.

cami215, i'm a biochemistry major. so basically i take classes with all the pre-meds/chem/biology majors (which is a large proportion of the deans scholars).
i think for plan ii, they tend to put more emphasis on your essays. for ds, i think they look for well-roundedness, and of course, an interest in science.
JJkitty, one of the advantages of ds (also plan ii) is that you get to take many honors classes, even the ones that fill up quickly (usually freshmen register last, after the seniors, juniors, and sophmores. but deans scholars register with the grad students even before the seniors/ and plan ii ppl get to take plan ii classes that are generally smaller and more fun). so basically the deans scholars are guaranteed spots in all if not most of the classes available. and looking at the honors classes i'm taking now, i tend to believe that they require less work than regular classes but are more intense and definitely more extensive. hope that helps!
