DeAnza vs. West Valley College

Can anyone from the bay area tell me the pros & cons of DeAnza vs. West Valley in preparing a student to transfer to a UC (or a CSU)? Semesters vs. quarters?

does not matter too much. just don’t let west valley counselors tell you to take classes you really don’t need. Follow the Igetc and Assist.org site only, as well as the uc counselors where you plan to transfer. Sign up for west valley’s honors transfer program and take classes. Also, sign up for alpha gamma sigma for some extracurricular credit that shows up on your transcript. Don’t take stupid counseling, library, or history of film classes.

West valley is now a non smoking campus like deanza has been. Our math department sucks for anything past math 3a. Blasberg is the best math teacher there in my opinion. The campus is really nice, but construction has been super gay.

that advice goes for any community college. The counsellors there really try and keep you at the CC for as long as possible. Do your own research with assist.org and such, and you’ll do fine.

Ogi

I’ve gone to both schools and I’d say which one you choose is really an individual choice. Personally I like that DA is quarter. I would say do not go where all your friends go. Pick one school and focus, it’s that simple. DA is more academic so if you’re coming from lynbrook/monta vista you will feel right at home. WV might allow more of a social aspect. And like Borya said the issue of transferring is something you need to take upon yourself, don’t rely on counselors.

omg i like DA wayyyy more [i went to both schools]

WV is too ghetto for me
and i prefer quarter over semester too
and also, academics at DA are better imo

SOOO true lionheart! I actually went to Lynbrook and it has prepared me so well for de anza!

de anza / foothill > all.

quarters are awesome IMO. i’m at cal now, and semesters feel way too long.

professors are also really good at de anza. very bright, and helpful. i wish i had kept up with them now that i’ve moved on…

de anza also has tons of student resources and is pretty well funded.

DE ANZA! I’ve attended both schools but De Anza is by far the better choice. It is nationally ranked and features some amazing professors who have graduated from places like Harvard and Stanford. The majority are very helpful and accessible. The student body is more diverse (lots of international students which can give you a different perspective on education,) and the students are much more academically and socially inclined. If you’re looking to join a club, De Anza has a long list that of them that are a very active presence on campus. From my observations, WV is just an extension of high school. Also, quarters move so quickly that they force you to stay on top of your work. If you want the most bang for you buck, De Anza should definately be your first choice!

west valley has tons of hot chicks, ******s with loud cars, and is basically high school part 2. If you want easy A’s, it’s a better choice than deanza. I went to high school in Cupertino, and coming to west valley to take general ed classes was a serious joke.

hey Poppin, what is your major and how long did it take you to get outta DA?! was it a hard adjusting to Cal??

I’ve attended both schools, but I chose West Valley over De Anza, because West Valley has the Honors Program (TAP for UCLA). Borya is right about West Valley counselors…personally, instead of answering my questions on the first day, my Honors Counselor asked if she can copy the schedule of classes I wrote for myself in order to transfer to UCLA with business economics and receive an A.A. in Honors, so she could give it to other students. I like semesters over quarters. I had two amazing economics professors, who have graduated from Harvard and UCLA. Our math department does NOT suck “for anything past Math 4 A”, but our computer programming department is past awful. I loved all my professors (Of course, after a careful review on ratemyprofessors.com  I think De Anza is more competitive and academic, but I just love West Valley more :]

^^our math department blows. Blasberg is the only competent teacher there currently.

Our math department does not blow. I have not taken Blasberg (I heard he is not the best), but B.Weiss, D.Burzynski, J. Kenstowicz and R. Warecki are really good professors (I am happy I took them).

whatever, I’m not here to argue with you. Generally, west valley is considered to have a weak ass math department. Blasberg is the smartest guy there, burzynski is supposedly the easiest. I have only taken 3 classes of math at wv though. Math 3a, 3b, and stats honors.

I agree with you, but since I have not taken Blasberg, I can’t say anything about him. I am just saying that my Math 3 A, Math 3 B and Math 4 A professors were good. There are always professors in each college, who can fail everyone in the class, and you can’t judge the entire math department based on them. (BoryaF, I do not mean you, I am just saying in general) I think before taking a professor, it is better to read about him/her.

Lionheart… you are WRONG!
I was from Lynbrook and I think De Anza is 3x easier!

I prefer De Anza over West Valley. I took a few courses at West Valley, and in the end De Anza has prepared me to transfer vs. West Valley.
