Dear future applicants, what do you want to major in? Why?

I’m curious. I see a lot of CCers going for biology/ pre-med. Is it just to make money? And for those who major in things like East Asian studies; why? Once again, very curious.

There are intended engineering students on here too. I’m going into aerospace engineering because I love everything aerospace and I think I could do engineering, though it will be very challenging,

Nuclear Engineering because I want to be part of a new push to alternative energy sources in the future (particularly nuclear energy) and it would allow for unique career opportunities given the implications associated with anything nuclear, there needs to be firmly drafted policy, and it really brings math and science to politics so it interests me strongly.

^^ Awesome! Personally, i’m going into Sustainability and international policy. I’m really interested in climate change and how China is tackling it. I hope to use methods learned from developed regions and help developing regions implement them before the effects of pollution are irreversible. @Jcannon1023 @albert69

@0br0123 my front runner for a minor currently is environmental policy! Or maybe political science just for some enjoyment! My interests and strengths don’t necessarily line up but I’ll be damned if can’t find a way to experience both, and a not completely applicable minor may just have to be “my way” of experiencing both.

@0br0123 Your intended major is so interesting! Are you hoping to look at specific areas within Sustainability/How did you become interested in the subject area?

At the moment, I’m planning on majoring in International Relations and am thinking about (International/Business) Economics, Sustainable Tourism, or (Marine) Conservation. IR & Econ are a result of my love for travel/culture and my need to understand how systems work, Tourism and Conservation as a result of scuba diving.

I’m planning on majoring in meteorology and math. Why? Ever since hurricane sandy my mind blew and wanted to see how they formed. I want to do research and someday be in the news and telling the world what we’ve research!!

Computer Science/Engineer Why? Because I want to work in Silicon Valley for a big name company. Also, I want to help create and innovate new forms of technology for the future.

Chemical Engineering, because I intend to delve into Nanotechnology and hopefully advance cancer research through Nanomedicine. Also, it’s a pretty flexible major.

I don’t think anyone goes to bio/pre-med to make a lot of money. The people who do general bio and don’t get into med school often have a lot of trouble finding a high paying job. To become a doctor, you have to work your butt off in undergrad, get into med school, and its a lot more of schooling there. When you finally become a doctor, its a few years before you start making real money, and when you do you are working very long hours for it. And your salary gets capped (although at a pretty nice 400k) after a while, unless you start your own practice. Nobody does bio/med if they don’t love it.

Now talk about finance/econ majors (and some of those East Asian majors too) aiming to be investment bankers- thats a different story.

@puzzled123 i plan to be a finance major not necessarily aiming to be an Investment Banker (although its well in my radar) but possibly to work in trading or analyzing. There are a lot of people who actually love studying business related things because how the world economy works is amazing…and we like making money lol

Very cool majors and very cool reason!

@puzzled123 i see what you’re saying! It is just that a lot of my classmates want to do a certain major solely to make as much money as they can. I find it amusing actually

People act on what they know. How many people at 16 years old say “I want to be a pharmacist!” or “I want to be a physical therapist” or a wealthy “executive at an insurance company”???

They chase after 1) what they see in larger society (physician, lawyer, engineer, “businessman”) or 2) what they see in their own families or life experiences. Sometimes you’ll get the “teacher” or “nurse” out of the second group.

Quite honestly, I think that I am undecided. I would possibly go for political science, but in my family, my parents would prefer me to study pharmacy. We’re a South Asian family, and it’s common to strive for becoming a doctor or engineer. It’s a cultural thing. Those are respectable professions with job security. In my vocational high school, I had to argue with my parents in order to apply for Criminal Justice (at the time, I wanted to be a lawyer). In short, though I still have a year, I’m just in the middle of abiding by my parents, who are more practical, or going with my gut.

@pharmacyitup If you live in the U.S., pharmacy doesn’t necessarily have job security. There is a projected glut of pharmacists. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3687123/

Biology/Pre Vet considering a double major with finance. I know for certain that I want to be a veterinary surgeon and I also might like to open my own practice, so I want to have some business skills as well.
