Dear MIT applicants, potential class of 2015

Dear MIT applicants,

Step 1: Breathe.

Step 2: Exhale.

Step 4: Repeat steps 1 through 3. You will be guaranteed to get into MIT.

Step 5: Realized there was no step 3.

Some of us have chosen to go the path of Early Action. Best case scenario? Acceptance. Not necessarily at MIT, but somewhere that, over all else, is a good fit for each and every one of us. Okay-case scenario? We get deferred and have to wait until the next round of admissions to find out where we're going. We all end up go to college, not necessarily the best fit for us. Worst case scenario? It's not worth thinking about, it's not going to happen.

You'll be seeing threads with scores, awards, and hooks listed. Forget it. Stop clicking, stop reading. Who cares? They're not you, and they are not even close to comparable to you, nor you to them. You're different, that's all. So don't feel worse because somebody else got straight 800's, but don't feel better than someone who has a 3.5 GPA. There is a story behind each poster, and we'll never fully know it or understand it, so why bother making assumptions?

My advice is for us all.

Finish your homework.
Wash your face, brush your teeth.
Chill out until it's dark, with a quiet activity.
Go outside.
Look up at the stars.

You can see so many, but in reality, you can see very few. There are so many stars you can't see. The stars you're seeing may have died out years ago, and the stars that are just now blooming may not be visible in your lifetime.

You are a star. In some way, you shine. Maybe MIT can see it, maybe MIT can't, and maybe MIT is looking for a different set of stars this year. But so what? Every constellation is beautiful, and we cannot see them all at the same time, and just as we cannot see certain stars, we cannot see the hidden tapestries of the sky.

But somewhere, far out there, somebody else might see you. Keep your eyes open, and look for other stars.

Welcome to application season, senior class of 2011.

Shine.

But, on the other hand… it’s so much more fun to PANICCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

You lost me at “wash your face”.

hahahaha

This was a really great post. I always love these kinds of things. Thanks.

I’m shiny.

Wow, that was really beautiful. I liked it a lot. Thanks  Good luck to all!

HAHAHA @ Euroazn, story of my life…

but thank you Anonymous Girl, reading posts like these always makes me feel so much better :)

Thank you for this post and for the deep thought and good intention you put behind it. You’re totally right that the best thing we can be doing now is finishing our homework and trying to breathe - it’s so easy to forget that when we’re so overwhelmed with everything. It can be so easy to lose ourselves and lose our patience during this stressful time, but I think this original post definitely deserves more appreciative responses. So thank you. Thanks for the thoughtful reminder and for your kind spirit.

You’re welcome. I just wish my essay was even half as good.

I wish I had time to panic, I deliberately packed up my schedule around this time so that I wouldn’t have time to think about colleges. So far, things are going fairly well.

Thanks for this though AnonymousGirl, I know I and a ton of other people need to hear it. I hear people in my halls talk about their 35’s or how they are near a break through in their research and I need to take time to step back and say, I’ve written the best essays I can and have worked hard at school the last 3 years. I’ve done the best I can personally do and each college will look at me with a holistic approach.

I hope I can come back and say Questbridge matched me with MIT or that I got in EA but until December 1st, I’ll just sit back and do the piles of homework and the time consuming ECs.

thanks for reminding me i have so many more important things to do right now than stay on cc until dark, well better get to work
