Dear NU students: What's NU really like?

what do you love/hate about your school?
it could be ANYTHING.. social life, etc.

thanks! :)

Let's see...

I love just about everything about NU...I'll try to list some specifics...

I love the lake in the summer/spring.
I hate the lake in the winter.
I hate how Sargent Dining Hall has worse sanitary ratings than Taco Bell.
I love how Taco Bell has among the best sanitary ratings in downtown Evanston.
I could deal with fewer bicyclers running walkers off the sidewalks.
I might be happier if there were a few more ellipticals on campus.
I think SPAC is pretty awesome, though.
I LOVE that NU covers all of the aid that FAFSA or your CSS Profile says you need.
I hate that there's basically no incentive for you to get outside scholarships.
I love the variety of work study jobs available.
I wish work study jobs would pay a little more.
I love the burritos at Willie's Cantina in Willie's Food Court (in Norris).
I love Norbucks.
I love our proximity to Barnes & Noble.
I don't often see very many bugs...which is great...so much better than Florida.
I wish the dorm bathrooms were a little bigger/less gross.
I love the size of the single rooms in Plex.
I think the wide variety of off-campus apartments is great...albeit a bit expensive.
I adore the student theatre community (StuCo) here.
I love the fact that NU boasts the Dolphin Show, which is the largest student produced musical in the nation.
I met my boyfriend here...so yeah, NU is a matchmaker as well as a baller school.
I love our football team and the hype that surrounded them this season.
I love how our basketball team just beat two ranked opponents (Minnesota and Michigan State) back-to-back.
I love how our lacrosse girlies are so awesome: 4-peat.
I don't much like the sub-zero temperatures or the slippery ground.
I have adored every single one of my professors thus far. They are inspirational.
I love the German department.
I love how Norris is simultaneously super easy and super difficult to get along with.
I wish our bookstore would be bigger.
I wish snow plowing people wouldn't be right outside of our windows at 9 a.m.
I think it's crazy awesome that there is something artistic to go see nearly every weekend.
I forgot to mention...we're 12 miles north of CHICAGO.
I really like those crepes at Norris.
I think the fact that the library was designed by a guy who designs prisons is pretty cool.
I love The Daily Northwestern.

Whew, I'm exhausting my already pretty tired brain.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

About dating... I hear there's not a lot of that going on at Northwestern. Is that true?

4-peat? I say minimum 8-peat. Sorry I needed to do it.

Modulation,

I don't think you will find huge amount of dating scene in any top schools because:
1. "Dating scene" is proportional to "amount of time available to date"
2. At top schools, "amount of time available to date" often ends up being the opporunity cost for studying midterms, finals, attending career workshops, looking for internships, or just having fun that is needed after all the work/stress...etc. In other words, the more you care about schoolwork (and NU isn't easy in general) and career, the less time you will allocate for "dating". That's just how the economics works for highly driven students. :)

About the dating scene, before getting here, I heard that...you're either randomly hooking up with people or you're practically married to them.

With a few exceptions, I find this generalization to be true. The couples I know (including myself) are ALWAYS with each other, Gorilla-glued, even. Everyone else seems to have hook up partners or...just deals with whatever they can find at parties...or is asexual.

So, if you're talking about casual dating (as opposed to serious, nearly married status), your perception that there's not much of it is just about right.

Guess I'll contribute...

I love:
that students actually care about work
A&O and mayfest
greek life
the variety of students here
the wide array of coffee shops in Evanston
that I can still go to concerts every weekend because the school isn't in the middle of nowhere
that the school does a lot to get you going on internships
that I'm not going to have to move anywhere in order to get a badass internship
the "night life" in Evanston
our on and off sports enthusiasm
that everyone here somehow likes playing frisbee

I hate:
the cost of everything (books, dorming, PARKING TICKETS JFKSLFJAKFASLFKS)
that people sometimes go a little far with the partying
occasional student drama
that I can't view my CTECs anymore because I forgot to fill out a class evaluation
my advisor

Ahahah, ohhhradio, for some reason I found the CTECs one funny. That would get on my nerves SO much.

I love the people
I'm a sucker for the Buffalo Chicken Wraps at Willie's Food Court
I also like the crepes
Willard is great
I love that the sororities are so chill (at least the one I'm a pledge at is)
All the activity fairs
The office of fellowships
The random ways in which The Rock is painted
watching my friends go on midnight BK runs
the fact that I can be intellectual without being laughed at
the fact that I can be an idiot without being laughed at
firesides about polka, satirical writing, and irish dancing
NBN
The Dolphin Show
SASA
The SASA show
Res Colleges in general
The Lakefill
The little nooks in the Library
Norbucks

There's just so much, it's hard to encompass it all.

Oh, I have a question. How is NU when it comes to drinking? Is there a lot of regulation of underaged?

thanks so much everyone (:

Likes:
-There's a lot of school pride, not always centered on sports but school pride nonetheless.
-I have an excuse to wear a lot of purple, my favorite color.
-When I turned 21, I suddenly had a plethora of bars I could go to in Chicago, ranging from wine bars to gay bars to sports bars and within each category, each bar has a different personality. And you don't have to worry about coming home drunk at 3 in the morning since the commute is pretty safe (and once you get to Evanston, you have 3 El stops to choose from so you won't have to walk far. In addition, NU police patrols the area heavily at this time and you have the option of using SafeRide). Northside Chicago (where Boystown and Wrigleyville are located) have some of the best night life scenes, and getting home from there doesn't take long.
-Like lovelyspotlight, I've adored every single one of my professors.
-I got to take a class at the Field Museum (!) and go behind the scenes. My class was also invited to meet with the Board of the Museum to help decide the fate of a highly controversial artifact.
-People are unpretentious (how they talk, how they walk, how they carry themselves)
-Intellectualism here is not phony and not about name-dropping.
-People are not insecure about their looks whether they're gorgeous or ugly.
-Students are not attention-seeking, i.e. few "look at me, I have such good taste. also, I hate corporate America even though it gives the most money to charity. omg Obama is God" kind of hipsters, people wearing high heels for no reason, people who blatantly display name-brands or are oblivious to the social connotations of certain brands.
-The intercampus shuttle (which takes one from Evanston to Downtown and vice versa), which runs on Saturdays now : D
-Whole Foods, Jewel-Osco, Borders, B&N, really nice movie theater, like 50+ different eateries/restaurants/bistros of all price ranges, like 10 different coffeeshops and teashops-- all within walking distance! A lot of the places also offer discounts to NU students.
-RED MANGO!!! (frozen yogurt). It's the equivalent of Pinkberry on the East and West Coasts. For variety, you can also take the intercampus shuttle Downtown and walk to BerryChill (but Red Mango is so much better) or take the El to YoBerri, Starfruit and some other places.
-Cheap apartments available around campus (I'm living in one now that's a block away from campus but I actually miss the dorms already and am thinking about going back next year).
-Nice Jewish boys that are to die for
-Good dorm food. If you don't like them, you're probably a little high-maintenance.
-The cultural shows!
-The speakers and guests brought in!
-The University's prestige especially in Chicago. All kinds of people will be impressed by NU and among them are employers who love hiring NU students and alumni.
-The University, by virtue of being a liberal arts institution, is intellectual but also prepares students to apply what they've learned to the real world. Yes, we are pre-professional but careers are not all we ever think about. I also like that we're openly pre-professional, unlike some colleges that claim not to be but have a lot of students applying to professional school anyway and have to be secretive (even to themselves) about pursuing that route.

Dislikes:
-Most places in Evanston close at 10 (except the bars of course).
-I wish there was a 24-hour space in the library because sometimes my sleeping habits are irregular and I suddenly want to study at 4 in the morning, but I guess the University doesn't want to encourage this. The library is open til 3 though, not bad.
-The gay club is a little too white for me.

bleedingpurrrple, thanks a bunch! Other answers are helpful too, but that covered a bunch of things I've wondered about - things that I need to hear without specifically asking about them.

How about fraternities? Any insight on this?

i think there is a fraternity for everyone.

i don't think NU is too strict about drinking.

and I don't think there is a problem with the dating scene either and there is definitely enough time to have a social life unless you are a quadruple major or something. If you are socially calibrated then it shouldn't be too hard to find someone.

Complaints:
-the damn winter
-people are so...normal
-dining hall hours

Otherwise, people are chill, campus is beautiful, there are always events going on, & Chicago is amazing.

The dating scene does consist of a lot of random hook-ups or serious relationships. I was worried about that before coming here (I'm a fan of casual dating), but it's been relatively good.

People aren't all normal. Spend more time around Jones/Chapin. ;)

Hah, yeah, I don't know very many "normal" people. I guess I don't know what you consider normal...but, if it's somewhere around "boring," I'm a theatre major and don't encounter many boring types. And, in my dorm, I'm surrounded by people who scream "LAWL" and "F**K YOU!" at video games all day. I consider that abnormal...and maybe a little unhealthy. I don't know who these normal people are.
