Death Metal Anyone?

Seattle is very oriented towards rock/alternative/metal than hip hop or rap. I have a lot of friends who go to UW who enjoy listening to rock/metal. The school is so large that you can most likely find somebody to jam with.

yea, death metal sounds really good when you scream into the mic. take some of the screaming out of death metal songs, and then you just MIGHT, MIGHT have yourself a good song

update: i just tried to listen to a song my slayer, nvm, it's all crap

Burzum is the ****

Love death metal. Grew up on Cannibal Corpse. Also a big fan of not so death metal like Slipknot. Anyone who thinks metal fans are all greasy haired boys who live in their moms basement and wear oversized black clothing is mistaken.

Ever heard of Angelspit?

lmao @ Easton722

Yes, it is crap. *** are they saying anyway? Bunch of maniacs lol

I am more of a general metal kind of guy - Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Sepultura, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc. You know, the classics. :)

And then after a fit of classic metal, I go to the Billy Joel and Yes albums on my iPod. Hehe

I'm honestly not the biggest metal fan, but I respect the genre. It's just too much for my eardrums though.

Se

LOL...

I don't really know why people dislike metal and people who listen to it...

My typical outfit consists of a shirt (either a polo or a t-shirt of my favorite bands) and jeans. I have what most people would generalize as "skater" hair...

I am applying for business at some of the top public universities, so I am far from the guy who lives in his mom's basement.

Death metal has no screaming in it... Death metal makes use of low growls lol. Black metal has screaming in it.

I don't think I can ever stop loving metal. I grew up playing guitar and shredding in the middle of the night lol.

I just don't like metal :(

No problem, I respect that :)

At least you weren't rude like Senor Boombox lol.

Namaste are you indian? I am indian lol

I like metal, but I’m not really into death metal. I prefer the more symphonic/melodic metal bands. I don’t mind if these bands use growling, though.

I had a metal phase in high school. I didn’t dabble too much into the history or obscure bands but some favorites were (early) System of a Down, Mastodon, Opeth, and Disillusion. Some more lightweight punkish bands but with screamers that I liked were The Used and Emery.

But by the end of high school I just wasn’t very angry anymore (haha) and couldn’t rock out, bang my head etc to the old songs. Now I listen to much softer music and hearing deep throaty screaming, growling, squealing, etc. does nothing for me. One problem I have with death metal is that it seems to only be able to convey anger, no other kind of emotion whereas most other genres can express a range of emotion (but to a lesser degree). There are a lot of angry songs I like from softer bands, for example.

The other problem I have with most kinds of metal is that I find the genre as a whole to be very unoriginal and repetitive. Occasionally I’ll find some more creative metal bands (Disillusion) but overall way too many bands sound very similar to eachother. If I heard a band that used screaming as more of a background atmospheric (or if the vocalist sang), didn’t make the guitarist play such repetitive rhythms and let him go wild for the solos, got the bassist to play some adventurous riffs in the back (or at least don’t make him shadow the guitar riffs), and let the drummer play more of a varied rhythm with solos, so long as he doesn’t abuse the kick drums then I would appreciate it much better. EDIT- and some tempo changes and overall creative composing would be nice.

I have respect for the genre, especially the older bands, but like several other genres I don’t feel the newcomers have successfully lived up to the foundation that’s been set for them.

Wow, I had no idea I’d find this type of thread on CC :)

I absolutely love metal! And just as a preface to all you haters out there, I’m a STRICTLY classically trained pianist (12+ years) with fourteen state/national competition wins. But metal has always been my favorite genre. As with any genre, there’s bound to be really bad bands. To the poster above, if DM bands are starting to sound too similar, you probably haven’t dug deep enough. If you have the patience enough to search for the good ones, you’ll find that the sheer musicianship that can be found in metal is extraordinary (much more so than what can be found in other genres- excluding jazz and classical). I listen to DM and prog in nearly equal amounts, so I’ll list my favorites in each genre.

The DM bands that I always come back to are suffocation, death (RIP schuldiner), gorgoroth, origin, arsis, nile, nargaroth, cynic, gorguts, meshuggah, burzum, immolation, MA, possessed, tiamat, venom, deicide, EARLY sepultura, atheist, obituary, anata, and demilich. I tend to stay away from most BM bands (extreme music w/o growls just sounds weird - burzum, mayhem, and the like are exceptions) and mainstream thrash (slayer? PLEASE.) in favor of the more creative stuff.

And then my favorite prog bands (if you’ve heard of more than 3, MAJOR kudos to you ;)): portal (the one from canada, not the UK), nekropsi, therion, galahad, porcupine tree, demians, dominici/dream theater, ayreon, morte macabre, marillion, andromeda, the old dead tree, riverside, psychotic waltz, seiges even, vanden plas, and anglagard. And the classics such as king crimson, camel, comus, and ELP.

And of course, Opeth. I had no idea which genre I should stick them in, so they a paragraph for themselves. (much like Walle’s spork)

Well, great to hear about other DM-loving CCers out there! Oh, and I’m a girl. Bet you didn’t catch that.

i would probably classify opeth pretty easily as a death metal band, and certainly a very good one, but death metal isn’t really my thing for the most part (i think someone mentioned agalloch which is pretty cool, the mantle and the white are great).

i love a lot of prog rock/metal though. porcupine tree is one of my favorite bands, dream theater used to be but i’ve kinda moved away (scenes from a memory, images and words, and awake will always be good) from them in the past year or so. i like the ayreon that i’ve heard but that’s not saying much, same with camel. more widely known prog-ish bands like king crimson, rush, pink floyd, queen, kansas, supertramp, etc., are all awesome of course.

Mjölnir, have you looked into any of steven wilson’s side stuff (blackfield, no-man)? ever listened to x-japan (prog and power metal, also excellent ballads) or alcest (french, black metal/“post” metal (stupid term))? i’m kind of decently-versed in prog and there are a few bands you listed under prog that i haven’t heard of, and a lot i don’t actually have anything from, but i’m always looking for new music so if there are any in particular from that list or otherwise that you especially recommend, i’d be interested.

also, side note, saw symphony x mentioned a few times, if anyone’s a fan they should check out russell allen (symphony x’s vocalist) & jorn lande’s “the revenge.”

Iron Maiden + Megadeath > all other metal combined

I LOVE PROG METAL, Power metal, symphonic meta

-Kamelot
-Nightwish
-EPICA
-Sonata Arctica
-DREAM THEATER

yeah

@ouais: I’d say Opeth are just as much prog as they are death, so putting them in one genre would be a disfavor to the other. Yes, Opeth is just that good. ;)

I’m really into pretty much everything SW does, especially bass communion and IEM, with the exception of no-man (too mellow). Did you buy his solo project Insurgentes yet? It came out last November… it’s AMAZING. A bit mellow, but very very dark. Alcest is great too. I’m more into their earlier, straight-up-black-metal stuff though. Seeing that you’re into them, are you also into 80s shoegaze? (bands like ride, cocteau twins, jesus and mary chain, and lush are quite good.)

I’ve listened to x-japan before, but I’ve gotten a bit tired of power/speed metal (helloween, dragonforce, gamma ray, stratovarius, angra, etc.) and migrated to more aggresive, brutal death metal (which tends to be much more technical than power metal) bands, like the ones I listed in my last post.

It’s great to hear of other people into prog! (@haiku as well) I’d recommend…

anekdoten - Nucleus
*anglagard - Hybris/Epilog
green carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness (which is an hour-long song)
spock’s beard - V
demians - Building An Empire
*portal - Blood Red Tape (one of the BEST political albums that exist IMO)

…for starters. All are leaning towards the mellower side of prog (more in the vein of 70s prog than metal). Asterisk for the best ones.

For anyone into electro/prog, listen to Pure Reason Revolution’s The Dark Third (their new album is absolute *****).

And to haiku, check out Therion’s Sirius B and Lemuria and Aina’s Days of Rising Doom. If you’re into symphonic metal, you’ll LOVE them! Straight-up symphonic goodness.

i like jesus and mary chain. one of my friends introduced me a while ago, she’s kind of frighteningly obsessed. i haven’t really explored much other shoegaze but it’s something i’ll look into eventually i guess. hah, i don’t like no-man either, although not because it’s too mellow - mellow can be good sometimes (wilco, elliott smith, even a lot of porcupine tree stuff, especially stupid dream)! i really like insurgentes, actually listening right now; both blackfield albums are phenomenal too.

i used to like stratovarius somewhat but sorta stopped listening in favor of better power/speed-ish metal bands like royal hunt, sonata arctica, and twilightning, although lately twilightning is the only band along that vein that i listen to with any frequency.

light of day, day of darkness is awesome, i’m a green carnation fan. the dark third is a great album also; haven’t heard PRR’s latest but i suppose i’ll have to check it out, kind of disappointed to hear it’s no good. i’ll definitely check out your recommendations since it seems we have fairly similar taste (on some level at least), so thanks, i appreciate it! with respect to x-japan, did you ever hear “art of life”?
