Death of custodial parent, next FAFSA?

My friend died this year. The parents were separated so DD would have filed FAFSA with just the info of the custodial parent.

Does she now file with the non-custodial parent's info or independently?

If she does file with the non-custodial parent, the income will be quite low, but that parent lives in home which is paid for. What are the rules which would allow the assets not to be counted?

On the FAFSA, the primary residence isn’t even mentioned. I would think this student would use their surviving parent on the FAFSA…but really his home won’t matter on the FAFSA.

DOH! Of course!
I am pretty sure there will be some liquid assets, too, the non-custodial parent is on SSI-DIS and may be receiving insurance proceeds which will be needed for living expenses.

Yup, surviving parent is now used. It doesn’t matter whether the student has lived with the surviving parent; once one parent is deceased, the other is used for FAFSA.
