Death of GSP Stigma

hola
I want to say that I've been excepted to NYU ED in the GSP class of 2009. i did apply to CAS originally, but that's Ok, I'm still going to NYU!!!!!!! Oh and to those who think that people who get into GSP are given less money because it's the best school they can get into are dead wrong. i got into 21K from NYU and 22K from the University of Chicago (which is actually a better school, and i'd go but I've lived in Chicago my whole life.

So be proud if you got into NYU no matter what school. And to those students who stigmatize the GSP, just remember that we're all at one of the best schools in the country and that we all have the same opportunity to succeed in our endeavors.

Also let me here from others who received that blessed package from NYU.

I agree I got 15K nothing to special but hey not too shabby and I can not wait to be part of GSP!! You got into U of Chicago but just GSP at NYU? Wierd I thought Chicago was harder to get into

arghhh!! I don't get it! Why did I only get $1750???

Oh...and sorry, I'm just venting....not trying to hijack this thread or anything.

That makes me feel better knowing you got 21K from NYU... my SAT II's weren't so hot so I'm hoping at the very least I'll be admitted into GSP. Without decent financial aid, though, I won't be able to go at all, so I'm hoping for something like what you got, kyjones05. What are your stats?

I should have applied to CAS or Gallatin too...
I might have had better chances there...I mean GSP :)
Hello Matt, I am back again lolol

My stats were as follows: 1240 SAT (660, 580), 26 ACT (32 Eng, 24 math, 26 reading, 21 science). 4.0146 GPA @ a magnet high school. 740 SAT2 French, 640 writing, 630 literature. 5 AP's. Mostly honors classes, National Achievement Semifinalist. Lots of EC's.

welcome back kj

kyjones, how come all these kids from magnet schools keep getting bad SAT scores, i dont get it

what is a "magnet" school?

public high schools that u have to test into, stuvyesant would probably be the most famous and prestigiouos. BAsically the best of the best get into these school they "attract" all the smart kids to one school ( like a magnet haha) and they are supposed to get a superior education with more accelerated classes

thats why it dumbfounds me my high school with its 70% graduation rate and no SAT prep is beating top magnet schopls in SAT scores ( we have about 25 over 1400, and 10 kids over 1500, about 50 kids over 1300, and countless over 1200)

I've often wondered that myself, a lot of kids in my school are extremely smart and just don't standardize test well. That's my problem. Or maybe the problem is that a lot of kids are good at different areas that the SAT & ACT don't cover. like I'm good at acquiring languages, I take Spanish and French simultaneously with ease. I never really cared about my ACT & SAT, it's just a number and I'm secure enough with my intellectual capacity without these data.

A magnet school is a school that is supposed to "attract" the best and the brightest kids from a certain area.

u may be secure enough, but colleges arent lol

like everyone in my school knows the importance of SAT scores ( our shcool doesnt really emphasis it, but among ourselves and individual research we have found that out)

do magnet schools like udderly underscore the importance of the SATs?

Magnet schools are meant to give you an education, and I feel that mine has done that. We don't spend months prepping for the "big test" and conduct seminars for the juniors, most kids in my school are motivated enough to do it on their own if it's that serious. I know kids who have 1510's and 35's yet they have no drive, no passion for learning, no intellectual "spark" they just standardize test well. By no means, am I saying this is true of everyone, but colleges like to see that an applicant has something to accentuate the test scores with. How the student goes about demonstrating their abilities varies.

Basically there are numerous ways to highlight your intellectual capabilities, and the SAT/ACT are numbers that most of us forget after high school.

SAT's remain the number one factor in college admissions whether they admit it or not...you can try to deny there importance, but the fact remains that it is the only reliable standardized nation wide measure of intelligence or learning for collegs to go by. There is very high correlation between SAT scores and college performance also. You can complain about how fair they are and all that, but they are the most relaible of anything...gpa means nothing, some schools give out all A's.

"the fact remains that it is the only reliable standardized nation wide measure of intelligence"- If this is the case then I think it should be required that everyone takes the test, I know lots of people who don't take it and don't care. You shouldn't have to pay to take it, if its a genuine nation wide test there should be one test date that every high school student is required to take. In England we have SAT exams and everyone takes them on the same day. Over here you seriosly have to be loaded to keep up with all these tests, the amount of $$ spent on SAT, SAT II's, ACT, AP's ect. is ridiculous. It seems more like a money making scheme than a nation wide measure of intelligence.

SAT examines how well you keep your a$$ down for hours...lol
i don't know...we are pretty much requeired to take thme so...we don't have much choice...lol
I want to work for ETS ! or EST or ...w/e i forgot..
