^we would have zero population if that happened.

I think the death penalty is wrong.

“Anyways…do you guys think the death penalty will ever be abolished, completely (in US)?”

Not to be a grammar Nazi because my grammar is always wrong, but it’s “anyway.” Everyone does that mistake. I’m sure you knew that, though. : P
Anyways, that’s hard to tell. I think it will be but way in the future.

it depends really. if someone tortures the hell outta someone then kills the person, the murderer should deserve torture than just simple death.

As much as I would love that (for more than just murder, for rape as well), it’s against the US Constitution.

I haven’t read any of this thread because I usually get legitimately PO’d in these debates.

I have actually researched this topic and have come to the conclusion that the general populace is extremely uninformed on this topic. There are two issues at play here. One is your opinion on death penalty in theory and the other is death penalty in practice. The death penalty in theory is largely a political point of view. I personally am rather indifferent with this topic. The Death Penalty in theory does not exist so nobody should talk about it.

Then, there is the death penalty in practice. Your opinion on this is based almost solely on how well informed you are on the subject. It is not a political issue at all. It is based completely on knowledge. It is nearly impossible to support capital punishment in America if you are well informed on the subject. There are so many issues with the system. For starters, innocent men have been murdered legally by the state due to capital punishment. I personally consider that a major moral crime. And, there will always be innocents executed with a death penalty system. It happens. The judicial system always has imperfections. Luckily those serving life terms can be freed once their innocence has been proven. Another major issue is the cost. California students facing serious spikes in tuition would probably freak out if they realized how much money the state puts into a capital punishment system per year. It’s over 100 million per year for those interested. (114 actually) And does anyone know how often California actually executes someone? lol Ridiculous waste of money from a broke state.

And we still haven’t factored in that it is completely arbitrary and therefore racist. The system is clear. White lives are more valuable than black lives. It really is not possible to agree with the death penalty in America if you know all the issues surrounding the topic. Unfortunately, most people are clueless. I won’t go to deep in to the details (sorry if this is too long already) but 62% of Californians erroneously believe that the death penalty actually saves money. If people don’t even know something this simple, there is no way they have any idea just what the system entails.

The only bright spot is that it appears as if most of the intellectual elite in this country have realized that the death penalty is ridiculous. It is really hard to find any pro-death penalty supporters anymore that aren’t extremely slanted political groups. Unfortunately for them this is not a political issue and Americans are beginning to realize it. I would be shocked if capital punishment hasn’t been eliminated by the time my children reach adulthood. The civilized world is laughing at us. Time for the population to inform themselves and stop this obviously flawed system.

Heyyyy what a surprise. It only took until post number 8.

You know it costs about 25000$ a year to house 1 criminal right?

If there’s enough evidence and the crime is big enough, definitely.

The injections are like .00001% of the cost of the death penalty.

Actually by executing them, you are paying more money. In addition, victims of the crime do not have a right to choose the criminals’ fate. Crimes are brought forth into court by the STATE, not the victim.

Once again, you are clueless on the cost.

It has been systematically proven that the death penalty does not serve as a deterrent.

Who cares about money?

I am against death penalty most of the time. But what if the leader of a terrorist organization or a serial killer is captured. By keeping him alive, you run the risk of him escaping, which will put many more lives at risk. Would the death penalty be acceptable here?

Hilsa, I’m for pot legalization as well but you need to put down the blunt for a second. 90% of college kids have smoked weed? lol
I won’t judge you for it but try not to post high. Thanks.

Maryland has spent about 19 million per execution. California is clearly much higher.

It is called murder RATE for a reason.

:shakeshead

See, I told you these conversations **** me off.

Haters, I suggest you stop reading this then, haha.

Make life in prison the max sentence.

Voila. Wasn’t that difficult.

lol you cannot be serious

Do you realize what types of crimes are eligible for the death penalty?

Hint - None of them are crimes involving the search for money.

Well, I hope you read my post. I have links for you as well if you think I just made that stuff up.

See, even some people that are against the death penalty are clueless about the issue.

As I mentioned, stop looking at the death penalty in theory. Look at the death penalty in practice.

If a crime is little, go to prison.

If a crime is big, no death penalty, no prison, dump them in a deserted island with nothing. Economic, and torture. Muahaha. After 25 years, release them and put them in a polar bear cage. Saves money for zoos.

Have you ever seen the south? All red.

How about Texas? Red

Poor city people often vote blue. But the large scale poor areas in this country are conservative.
