I did speech in high school through the National Forensic League (NFL) and I saw on the website that Kenyon is part of the National Parlimentary Debate Association. In Kentucky debate was prety much non-existant. I mainly did limited prep events like Extemporaneous and Impromptu. From what I gather, I might like Parli Debate. Does anyone know how competitive the debate team at Kenyon is? If there is a lot of practice or a lot of participation? If they compete in other events besides Parli and model UN? Even general comments on Parli Debate itself would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

I dont know much about Parli debate but am in the Model UN team so if you would like information on that, let me know. I know the debate team is pretty active: they meet every week and participate in tourneys and such but am not the right person for details. We also have a Mock Trial team.
As I said, if anyone wants details about the Model UN team, please let me know. We participate in at least a couple of national conferences outside the state each year and have a decent record.

I'm interested in Model UN as well. Pretty much anything that supports my addictive speech habits ; ). Can you do both debate and Model UN? We had a similar program in high school but it was through the YMCA and wasn't on a competitive basis. Any information would be great!

yeah, you can do both. I know what you mean by addictive speech habits: I am pretty much the same.
To be honest, I doubt how it will work out logistically if you want to do both debates and model UN. Both groups meet regularly and take part in out-of-state conferences. If you want to do a lot of ECs and other things besides speech, you might want to be active in model UN one year and debate another, or something like that. That will help you to spare yourself time for other stuff as well, if you want.
The Model Un team usually participates in a LEIMUN conference here in Ohio itself. In the fall, we also travel to Pennsylvania to attend UPMUNC, a national conference. We travel to Boston to attend HMUNC in the spring. We are trying to make arrangements such that we will be able to participate in more conferences but we are not sure about that as yet. The conferences are really exciting, challenging and hectic and Kenyon has been doing well so far.

Thanks for the info! Sounds like fun. I'm not exactly sure if I am going to participate yet, but I'm not ready to give speech up either. We'll see. Anyway, thank you for elaborating on the programs. It gives me a much better idea of what to expect! I really appreciate the input!

I did forensics in high school too for a time so I may try to check out the model un at kenyon myself.

you should...I mean, being involved myself, I would love to see loads of people trying MUN. If you want to, you can make it a lot of fun.
See ya all in the fall in Higley Hall: that's where we do MUN meetings.
