Debate or Academic Decathlon?

I've been doing debate for two years now ever since freshmen year. I have a slight speech issue so I haven't been able to do very well competitively. I convinced myself I was going to quit, however, all of my debate friends knew I was thinking about quitting and ended up making me LD captain despite my speech incompetence and lack of skill. I have humiliated myself many times during rounds. We also have a new coach coming in who is known for being extremely skilled at coaching and has sent many to nationals, but I don't know I'm already a junior and I feel like It's too late to all of a sudden become good..

The other option is acdec, which is known for its intense studying and huge investment of hours. I'm a decent studier, and my school is quite reputable at acdec.

It's near impossible to do both acdec and debate. Suggestions?

It doesn’t matter as much how “good” you are at LD, rather than do you enjoy LD? You said you haven’t had a lot of competitive success, but if you’re with your friends in LD, you like doing LD, and you can keep your leadership position, then I see no reason why you should stop. Another question is would you enjoy acdec MORE than LD and do you like the people on acdec?

I personally would strongly suggest continuing with debate since people want to see that you are dedicated and committed to one thing.

Thanks! To be honest, I’m not positive if I love LD, yet. It’s an extremely tough EC with tons of extremely fast talking, extremely quick/smart thinking, ect. I was thinking about doing the easier PF with slow talking. I don’t know why I got the leadership position, but I guess I have no choice but to take responsibility. Hopefully this year ends up being more successful with the new coach.

I’m honestly don’t know much about acdec, and I picked it at a time where I was very pessimistic about my lack of success as a debater, but I really didn’t think it through. Turns out, although it’s a very fulfilling and fun EC, it’s a Crap ton of simply pure studying, which doesn’t sound fun.

Thanks!

I happen to know a bit about acadeca so if you want to know more, I’d be happy to share. So it’s like there is like 10 sections: speech (ironically), interview, math, science, social science, literature, essay, super quiz (team competition), music, and art. It is fun to some extent, if you have a team that is dedicated and willing to help eachouter out and do it. We often split up the parts and made funny videos for eachother explaining the different topics we were familiar with (in accents), but you’re right in that it is alot of content. I believe the next year’s theme is moderninsm and environmentalism, so if you’re interested that’s a start. The book looks interesting.

Anyways, do the extracurricular that you enjoy the most. I happen to like acadeca and learning about these topics that you don’t often hear about in school. And it brings together all different members of the school populatiotion - as you have 3 varsity, scholastic, and honors members so I got to meet some amazingly talented people, who may not be the A+ students in their class, but are amazingly talented and dedicated. We went to nationals together our sophomore year. Honestly, we didn’t do that much studying ( I read reviewed like 5 packets the week before) but that may be because I am from a smaller state and our team was just really chill.

That said, do the one that seems more interesting and fun for you. Forget about the awards and extra stuff, if you do what you enjoy, even if you aren’t good at it, then you will have a good senior year. It seems like you already have people supporting you and a position in debate, so if you are not afraid of failure, then maybe it will even help you become more open as a person and the new coach thing seems neat. If you are interested in acadeca, however, I’m your man. Let whatever ECs you choose be fun and enjoyable for you.

I did decathlon this year, I absolutely hated it. They just sit you down and make you test for like six hours, and the testing fluctuates between ridiculously difficult to kindergarten level.

Do debate, it’s a lot more fun in general.

El CO and Granada always win aca deca. Do debate.
