Hi
My school's going to start, for the first time ever, a debate club. (which I've joined.Whwn I asked what we'll be debating, they said science!?
How can anyone debate science (biology in particular)? It's either yes or no...there's nothing inbetween.
And they also said that most of it will come from the AP curriculum. Is it just me or is something really wrong with the whole thing?

I don't know if I'm right, but I think, some people feel pretty passionate about science, and think it's debateable. Not me...but...

The only things I can think of that are debatable are stem cell research and evolution. other than that it's ALL 100% non-debatable facts.

Yea, it's hard to debate on science.

Also, what do you mean by "it comes form the AP curriculum"? For some reason I'm thinking you're talking about an AP Debate class, which would be really weird lol.

you can debate about geneetic engineering too. Uh..besides that, there are a lot of people who oppose technology and people oppose astronomy and SETI. You can always think of how religion plays into it.

Well, as already mentioned, there's Darwinism, stem cell research, genetic engineering, and abortions could be reaching a little more into values debating but it's possible.

Yes there is something wrong because the same points would just be used over and over again and things will get old fast, though it may seem exciting at first.

when I said "AP curriculum" I meant that what we'll be debating will come from AP biology, chemisty, etc...
All that stuff would be debated from a philisophical point of view, or a religious one, there wouldn't be any scientific data to use, right?

Why don't you ask "them," the people who are orchestrating this thing.

I did ask "them"; they wouldn't give me a straight answer. They just told me "you'll see."

It would be hard to use scientific data. Imo, it's basically going on personal belief. I don't really see how you can debate that. Noone is going to change what they believe unless they discover something within themselves. Noone else can do that for them.

It's debating what DNA is made up of, but rather bioethics. Like the topics already mentioned: stem cell reserach, genetic screening, abortions, etc.

I asked them again. They confirmed that we will be debating stuff like cloning; stem call research; abortions. I still don't like the idea of debating science without usuinf scientific data.

you can debate ethics... if not that, then I would believe that most of your arguments would be composed of facts and research if there are arguments at all. But I do think science is generally debateable. There are still many things that scientists are not completely sure about. For example, is homosexuality genetic or environmental? What about intelligence? Those are controversial topics and pretty good debate topics.

Just do a little research for controversial science topics and I am sure you can find some interesting things to discuss. Though like you, I am a bit surprised that the main focus of a debate club would be science. It's different.

What kind of debate are you guys doing - Policy or Lincoln-Douglas?

I know for a fact that the debates will be as far away from politics as possible. It'll focus on biology; chemisty, etc...
I don't think we'll be debating homosexuality either.
