Debate

Hey are there any debaters here? Ive been doing debate for like three years now, mostly extemp but just recently started to do LD at the national tournament like the one at yale last weekend. Did neone else go the yale debate, if so how did ya do?

Ew I hate the debate club at my school (even if I'm VP). We have a local competition with 9 other high schools in the area where we debate each other for six weeks in the fall. It's incredibly easy because the other schools in our area tend to suck, with the exception of the other school in my regional district, which is the only school we've lost to so far. We do policy debate using the NFL topic. One of my last opponents didn't know where Guantanamo Bay was. -.-

In the Spring we do a Moot Court competition at Princeton University (PM me if anyone else does it too!), which is just Constitutional law in pairs where we act like lawyers in front of the Supreme Court. It's tons of fun.

We also do a state-wide one-day LD tournament in May, but it's in teams of 3, which is kind of weird...

That's about all we do as a club. I'm trying to get us affiliated with the NFL for next year and then hopefully a charter school (that's the process, right?) my senior year.

Do you guys know how to get started in NFL tournaments like Yale and all? For the invitational ones, do you have to win awards before you can go?

Hah yeah the debate team at my school got kinda sad the last year cuz the captains really didn't care bout the club rather what they could put on their resume. Though this year the captains seem to want to actually do much more. In my state (Connecticut) we have competitions throughout the year, like one day things. Thats just at the state level, not that hard in competition. You should definetly go to the national competitions like Yale, they are amazing and so much more fun. Umm im not sure as to how you get into it but i'll try and look it up for you. I mean schools come frome everywhere. Like I debated this person from Seattle. Plus the level of competition is so much higher. I dont know too much about policy but for LD the national tournaments are awesome.

You may be surprised to find out that debate in Kansas is pretty hardcore. The competition here is pretty fierce, at least for policy debate, which is only offered first semester (then LD, extemp, etc are offered second semester only. The whole state operates like this). I spend hours every day prepping and researching for policy and my tournaments are pretty competitive, with plenty of good teams/experienced flow judges, at least on the Varsity/Champ level.
