Debate?

I started debate my freshman year and it’s now the middle of my sophomore year and I’ve fallen out of love with it. Debate is a zero hour class and the teacher has started telling us that we need to put debate before everything else and is adding deadlines the week of finals. My grades are dropping in my online class and it has become more of a hassle than it’s worth. I talked to my counselor about it and she said I could drop it but the debate teacher asked to talk to me afterwards and told me that if I’m overwhelmed that I need to talk to him. Here’s the thing earlier in the week I told him that I would not be able to write two cases and asked for a comprise and he just said no you will finish your cases. My other extracurriculars are : band volunteering at the animal shelter, Spanish honor society, Hispanic honor society,NSLIY semifinalist 2 years, after school tutor for Spanish honor society, volunteering at the food bank and volunteering at my churches VBS for 4 years. I will also soon begin teaching Chinese and/or Spanish at a retirement home with a friend.(volunteering)
How much would quitting debate hurt my chances of getting into college?

I quit debate after frehsman year and i got into colleges lol. The important thing is to have something you’re passionate about. If thats not debate than so be it.

Listen to snowfairy137. If it causes too much stress, drop it. You don’t have to put debate on college apps FYI.

Never pick an extracurricular with a college application in mind. Do what you enjoy.

If you just live a normal happy life as a high school student, doing activities that truly interest you, almost surely one aspect of your experience (that you can’t even predict now) will help you define yourself as an interesting applicant when the time comes.

A small moment one day in my son’s job as a camp counselor provided a story for his essay, and he got into his top choice early decision. It wasn’t until he started brainstorming a variety of possible topics for each possible common app question that he even realized that moment could be used to reveal how he could be an asset to a campus. That is an example of how who you are will develop and be revealed through your extracurricular activities, whatever they may be.

Just have fun! Except for earning good grades, you need not live your life now with college applications in mind.

^That said, if you have current obligations to your club, then ethically you owe it to the group to fulfill your obligations before quitting.

Are you in CX?

No LD @BingeWatcher

My 9th grader does CX. It is very time consuming for sure. Do what makes you happy.
