Debate?

I'm new to debate and next week our team has to do a tournament. NEarly all of my friends here are fresh, and we were really taken aback after seeing a model debate today: The debaters speak so fast we can't even hear. I wonder how can we catch their ideas to rebut back. Is there anyone experienced in debate? It'd be nice if you have AIM or YM

What kind of debate is it? Policy? (I’m assuming that from the fact that you can’t understand your opponents)

Try listening to your varsity kids speak progressively quicker and flow each ‘level’ of speed. Flowing quickly and spreading will take a lot of time, and a lot of drills.

Most states have a novice division for their first few tournaments, especially in debate, so your opponents at the tournament should also be fairly new at the event. Don’t worry too much!

Instead of saying “debate” can you be a bit more specific? Is it forensics debate? If so, policy, LD, or PF? But if the debaters speak as fast as you say, then it’s policy. You’re better off looking at the resources on [National Forensic League High School Speech and Debate Honors Society](http://www.nflonline.org) than asking one of us.

I don’t know but it’s a kind of Urban debate league or so I think. I recognize the name of Bellaire, who showed us a model this afternoon.
