Debating between Electrical and Mechanical

I am debating between Electrical and Mechanical and they both appeal to me. What I come down to is just a few things which I can't really seem to be able to find answers to and would appreciate some responses.

One of the first things I am looking for is the job locations, I would rather in the future be able to work in a city like NYC than out in some town in the state. Though I wouldn't mind working in other places in NY at least(most other states...nah). What I come down to is I can't seem to find much info on the jobs in this aspect.(Heck, even using things like monster and some engineering site job boards doesn't show much results that are promising but I know thats not all).

Another thing is I am more interested in the bigger kinds of Electrical Engineering work like powering buildings, boats, complex wiring, etc. But the Electrical major offered has quite a focus on microelectronics and telecommunications instead. Don't know if it would still work out.

And finally, what kind of things do mechanical engineers do nowadays? I know I have seen HVAC as a example but that seems rather dull.

Electrical and Mechanical Engineering are both very broad subjects and will allow you to get a job pretty much anywhere you want.

When I started university three years ago, I was also hesitant between EE and ME. The part I found most appealing in EE was power generation and energy production, and I ended up majoring in EE.

Now that I’m about to start my senior year, I think I’ve made the right choice. Microlectronics and telecommunications don’t appeal to me that much, but after doing an internship at Areva T&D last summer, I found out that Power Engineering was the aspect of EE that really interested me the most. I’ll be doing my specialization in Electrical Power Engineering in the upcoming year.

Great to hear that, sounds like the same set of choices I am facing now as well.
