Hi everyone! I'm just about to start my senior year and I visited carleton over the summer and fell in love with it. After visiting about 15 other schools, I'm very confident that Carleton is my first choice. I'm seriously considering applying ed because I'm concerned about my chances for RD. A bit about me, I'm a girl from nyc, I have a 2220 SAT (cr: 800, m:700, w:720), 92 unweighted gpa, 5's on 4 aps, a ton of extracurriculars (hospital volunteer, tutor in underfunded school district, teach science classes to elementary school kids, computer coding clubs and programs, 300+ hours of community service, yada yada yada).

My parents aren't on board with carleton ED. They're concerned with prestige and before the college search for me began, they had never heard of carleton. They're pretty delusional and want me to apply to all the ivies/big name schools (they think that bc I got an 800 on my critical reading I can get into yale LOL). I pretty much know that I'll be rejected from all the ivies (maybe I have a shot at Cornell) and I'm not upset about that but I'm very very worried that I won't get into carleton RD.

Any input on my chances and on carleton in general will be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

You seem like a solid candidate- I don’t really “chance” people but I’ll just say that you look a lot like my daughter stats-wise, and I think she has a decent chance. Your GPA seems a little low but sounds like you’ve been taking APs at least so hopefully your weighted GPA is higher.

I do worry about name recognition when it comes to recruiting/interviews on the coasts but my Daughter loves Carleton so much that in the end I think it would be worth it. It is just a perfect fit for her socially. Within academia, Carleton is prestigious. Outside, it rarely matters past your first or second job interview. You will need to put a little more effort into job hunting if you want to return to NYC.

Carleton is my D’s second choice and she will probably apply ED to Brown, ED2 to Carleton. This could be an option if your parents are dead-set against ED1. Apply to Yale SCEA and see what happens!

But if Carleton is your #1 far and away, then you should apply ED1. It is a great school and also happens to be highly ranked for LACs. Good luck!

Maybe share some info about Carleton with them like above. The top students there have very high SAT scores and acceptance rate at 20% is indication of selectivity.

Also go to college navigator and put Carleton, Cornell (and some other schools your parents see as good schools) in as favorites and then compare them side by side.
Price, acceptance rate and SAT scores are pretty similar between Carleton and Cornell.
Carleton has alot less students and maybe along the way you can convince them it is a better fit.

Also run the net price calculator on some of the schools and see if Carleton comes out cheaper.

As a Carleton alum who lives and works in New York, I can say that it’s true that many people here have never heard of Carleton, but I also think that that is true of all but a tiny handful of liberal arts colleges, and I truly believe that the education students receive at Carleton is second to none. Even though Carleton’s alumni base is smaller than that of a large university, it is a very active community, and Carls are always willing to go above and beyond to help young alumni starting out. It is also worth considering whether you plan to go to grad school. Carleton sends many alumni to the Ivies after graduation (myself included), and I found that my Carleton education prepared me better for graduate studies than many of my peers who had graduated from “name” schools.

Couldn’t agree with inthewings more. Carleton certainly has many fewer alumni on the east coast than the Ives but those that are there are crazily devoted to helping graduates. The school does a great job linking former Carls to current Carls in internships, externships, and ultimately jobs.

And if some moms/dads out there are worried about job/career prospects compared to more recognizable names, just a look at Carleton grads mid career earnings should offer significant reassurance. Their earnings are higher than not only Midwest notables like Northwestern, U Chicago and Wash U, but even higher cost of living east coast elites like Columbia, Dartmouth, Amherst and Duke.

Couldn’t help but think of all this reading, this weekend, the Fall Voice (alumni magazine) profile of two 2007 grads. One was doing investment banking for Piper Jaffray, the other working as a Citibank broker. Ultimately they proved themselves true Carls - career shifting, just a bit, in pursuing their dreams. A quintessential Carl read.
