Is it worth applying to the Dec 1st dedline? or is it primarily only to decide which students get scholarships?

The December 1st deadline is for scholarship consideration. If you prefer not to be considered for scholarships, you can use the January 10, 2011 deadline.

i would like to be considered for scholarships but is worth it considering how many students apply?

We watched the numbers very carefully over the last few admissions cycles. In general, about 20,000 applicants will apply by the December 1st deadline for scholarship consideration. The last week of January to first week of February, somewhere between 800 and 1,000 of those applicants will be invited to interview for the Trustee (full tuition) or Presidential (1/2 tuition) scholarships. So perhaps 5% of all applicants are invited to interview. As a percentage of admitted students, 24% of the 2010 entering class was awarded a merit scholarship. http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1011/FreshmanProfile2010.pdf So if you feel you are well-qualified for USC and are likely to be admitted, you may have as much as a 24% chance of receiving a scholarship. (This is an exaggeration, because it doesn’t account for students who choose not to matriculate… but I like the sound of it )

For the most part, those invited have very strong academic credentials, but a significant number do not have the “perfect stats” that “chancers” will tell you you need. Some applying to the SCA, Roski or Thornton catch the attention of USC with their portfolios. Others have something special in their application or essay that makes them stand out.

So in determining if it is “worth it,” you should consider the cost to you to apply by December 1st instead of January 10th. If your only cost is the opportunity to procrastinate another month before completing your application, then yes, it is probably very much “worth it.” Do you have something else keeping you from applying by 12/1?

Good luck!

One more note: There is no “negative” to applying by December 1st, even if you are not invited to interview for the Trustee or Presidential. Your application will be considered just the same regardless. And MANY of those who apply by 12/1 find out in March that they have been awarded Dean’s, Director’s or University Scholarships. There are SO many more than just the two (Trustee and Presidential) everyone talks about - and you are only eligible if you apply by 12/1.

My stats are not 2400/4.0 by any means, but i still got a trustee - you never know.
apply by dec. 1.

A student who applies early has the opportunity to be considered for the merit scholarships. There is no downside to applying early. Perhaps you have that special something which sets you apart.

If someone were to be called for an interview, would they be considered admitted then?

I can’t imagine that an applicant qualified enough to interview would be rejected from the school.

not true, interviews do not mean acceptance by any means. I got in without an interview, I had friends who interviewed and did not get in.

Well I’m not talking about admission interviews, but rather the 800 to 1000 who are called for scholarship interviews mentioned above.

BigKev–Those chosen to interview for Presidential and Trustee scholarships receive their full admission packet from USC quite early–in late January/early Feb. About a week later they receive a letter inviting them to the interview sessions at USC held later in Feb.

Question: other than applying by Dec 1, are there any special forms, essays etc that you have to prepare to be considered for the Presidential/Trustee scholarships??

danic, no, there is no other preparation.
Students are considered for scholarship based on the application that every student submits. Consideration is not based only on the numbers, but on the whole package…something that makes you stand out above others.

If you receive a request for an interview to one of those scholarships mentioned above, does that automatically mean admission? (aka finding out earlier!)

crmichi, please see post #11, above :)

oh, sorry! thank you

Applicants wondering if it is “worth it” to finish up their applications by December 1st will find useful information in this thread.

For the record, I believe it is VERY worthwhile to apply for free money - one of USC’s Trustee Scholars from last year did not expect to be considered at all for scholarships, and was awarded USC’s biggest scholarship. There is no downside, and you never know…
