Deca

Does placing in the state DECA competition mean anything for college admissions and how much weight do admissions officers place it? I'm from California and the DECA program isn't as big here as it is in some other states such as Florida, but there were at least 1400 people at the state competition and our group was able to place 1st in Quiz Bowl (Out of 19 teams), and individually, I was able to place 2nd in my event exam.

Judge boned me on my role play so I couldn't place overall (FYI)

bumping because I would really like to know

nationals looks better.

Of course, but the national competition hasn't happened yet, and I was just wondering what would happen with what I have so far

deca's awesome!
i was there at states too! and i'm from that school you hate!! :)

haha

I'm also part of California DECA. I think that it sucks that FBLA has a stronger foothold in California than DECA, since some of their competitive events are so bsed.

Holding a placing in states is important since it shows that you have talent and potential, however I wouldn't depend heavily on it since you placed in Quiz Bowl. No offense to Quiz Bowl but it's one of those events that may allow you to build skill on something but isn't glaringly obvious.

If you work more on other parts of DECA in your chapter, it'll show more importance than the placing. Like actively helping in the Communications Challenge and doing important things in your chapter. Which chapter are you in? Cause some chapters do more than others...

Flutter: Castro Valley? Monta Vista? lol
kitty: Good points. I'm from the Foothill chapter and I'm going to try and be part of the chapter officers for my senior year. I placed at Norcal for other events, but obviously those achievements aren't as significant. blah I regret not starting DECA earlier

LOL flutterfly and I are both NOT from Castro Valley, though it's nice that that's the one you hate first. Try for officer since it allows you to show "leadership skills" though as a DECA officer I just take orders from our president. Hopefully you get more power then being a minion.
Just try and study real hard in the event you think is interesting.

What was the role play you got screwed on? The roleplay I did, we went in and he was like still writing the previous group's grading and the whole time he was like bent over taking notes instead of looking at us. He took points off cause we didn't ask him questions... you don't ask the judge questions in roleplays right?

No you actually are supposed to ask them questions so they are interacting. I was in the TSE event, where I was supposed to provide a sales pitch. Lack of time management deterred me from getting +40 or more points, and I ended up with a 52 on role play. When I asked my judge questions, I introduced my feature/benefits then asked if she could find those features as applicable to her. Just small little things that get them to talk is always beneficial.
Where are you guys from then?

MV XD We are still hated by so many schools.. how saddening... our freshman felt bad after norcal because some girls were making fun of them because they were from MV.

Haha how did I know. I doubt people hate you, but instead they're just jealous that you guys put a lot more effort into DECA than they do. You guys have some pretty crazy freshmen. What sucks is that at Foothill, members have to be at least 16 years old, with some exceptions. Hopefully that changes and we implement a more rigorous training schedule so we can actually compete with you guys.

Hah yea. I think.. it may just be Castro Valley that hates us. I was helping out at the booth for our presidential candidate and I overheard them calling the booth enemy territory. I really should study up on role plays.

Why doesn't your school let freshman or sophomores go to competition? Like I don't know why some schools don't let their underclassmen join especially since it'd increase CADECA's membership. Our chapter's largest membership comes from the sophomores and freshman, though that could be due to the fact that we are relatively still a new club at my school.

Castro Valley is just overall "unethical" (bustin out quiz bowl terms). They talked **** to us the entire time during quiz bowl and got handled by a two man team.

I think its because the class that DECA is part of, Econ/Bus Ownership, is an ROP class, which only allows 16+. Imo pretty dumb but I cant make any decisions until I get to an officer position.

Atl!!!!!!!!!
