Deceased family member...admission

Hello! I recently applied to Fordham as a spring transfer. I have yet to receive a response, because they requested my final grades, and the school cant make a decision until at least January 5th, 6 days before courses begin. My GPA decreeased semester from a 3.6 to a 3.5 at a community college in Florida. I enroleld in an extra course this semester, 6 classes total (all fairly difficult) and was inducted into the honor society. My Fordham app. was excellent despite the decrease in the GPA.

Anyways, the 2nd week of school my grandma, who I was living with, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Three months later my whole family was pretty much living in one house while my nana was on hospice. She had undergone extensive surgery and died three months to the day she was diagnosed, during my final examination week.

I am not using her as an excuse, and barely missed any classes while she was sick (1 or 2) however; the experience affected my grades. I earned 3.5 this semester and am not sure if I should inform admissions of the situation in a formal letter prior to their review of my application. I don't like speaking about my nana's situation and I am conflicted if I should write a formal letter explaining the situation and its effect. Someone please helpe me, do I stay quiet or write the letter? Thanks in advance!

Respectfully,

Justin

You have posted before. You need a response here on CC from the CC'ers. Here is my synopsis.

Don't rush Fordham. They aren't going to stop the presses on their regular admissions people just for you. Whether you are a superhero or an ordinary person. They know when classes begin.

Make sure your application is complete and nothing is missing.

They need to see who is returning Spring Semester because "space in a class" has more to do with dorm space than anything.

I dont know why you are fixated on Fordham and New York in your situation. Nobody is entitled to be admitted, and nobody is entitled to massive amounts of financial aid. If you get it, fine. But dont go expecting Fordham to feel sorry for you and admit you out of pity.

Community college transfers, it seems to me, face a more difficult task than four year college transfers. I dont know what Fordham's policy is on this, but posting on CC isnt going to speed things up for you.

I think everyone here wishes you the best of luck, but frankly its an uphill battle. I am perplexed as to why you are applying from a community college in Florida for a very expensive private college in New York?

Getting admitted for Spring Semester is always tough because dorm space is at a premium.

Good luck, but be patient.

Thanks for the synopsis

1) I am not fixated on New York. However; I originally went to a University, and couldn't make the commute so I transfered to a community college. (Asside from the academic rigor of the school) I applied to Fordham because I am from New York, have lived here all my life, and now live here again. Also it is the only college I applied to; I know that was wrong on my part.

2) I indicated on the application I will not dorm; I am living at home.

3) I don't want to speed up the application process, I just wanted to know if I should inform them of the situation or not. I guess not. I know I am not entitled to financial aid; I am willing to work extremely hard to finance my education.

Thank you once again for the synopsis. I am aware you are extremely helpful to students such as myself. Have a happy new year!

My pleasure and thanks for the clarification. I dont know how many at Fordham Admissions are working this week. Maybe you will hear something by Friday. If not, you may call them on Monday to see what they say.

Best of luck to you.

Hello! Once again thank you so much for your help... I will let you know the results. From all that I have researched it is an amazing school; it affords its students some of the most amazing opportunities and resources. We shall see. BTW, sorry to overabuse you but, are your familiar with their acting program?

Once again, have a happy new year, be safe!!
