Did anyone else think the December 12 ACT science portion was really hard? Post your opinions!

ridiculously hard. english math and reading were a breeze but science ****ed me in the ass

I agree, I mean, cmon, half the stuff was like stuff you learn in college or AP classes. It seriously was not fair…

I thought the Math was hard, Also some the science, but reading and english were simple.

YES!! I really don’t see how anyone could possibly finish the science section… It was the hardest one I have ever seen. I got a 33 on science last time but I had to guess on at least the last seven because I ran out of time. Also English wasn’t crazy hard but I think it was more difficult than usual.

Seems each test people complain about the science section.

It’s mostly subjective, because it only takes one misunderstood question to crash the entire section. To me, this defintely was NOT the hardest section I’ve seen (Oct 2009) was difficult, and Sept + June were so so.

yeah it was ridiculous. how were you supposed to answer the last question about which object had the shortest period or something like that? i had about 10 minutes left so i averaged all of them, but there must have been an easier way…

Each trial used the same distances, so all you had to do was compare the time for each distance, and one of them(Trial 1, choice A, Student W) had the least time for every test. It was a hard question though, I had to read it about 4 times to realize what was being asked.

EDIT: This is by far the hardest Science I have taken. I have a 35(Dec 08) and a 36(Apr 09) on the Science too. But so far, from what I’m seeing, I didn’t miss on the Science. But I struggled on this more than ever before, I seem to have gotten a few guesses right.

OH i didn’t realize that about the trials using the same distances. i’m always so confused by the act’s wording. for this test i actually just skipped reading the passages and went straight to the questions, only going back to the passage when the question asked for it. it was the only way i could finish on time!

That’s how I always take the Science. I’m a pretty fast test taker, but it always kills me for time. Finished with 15 seconds left the first time I took it, 5 mins the second, 2 mins this time. If you read the whole passage you can’t finish.

Well thequestionmark, we are not all like you

sa-07
it was not easy, but not the hardest either
to what prior act science sections are you comparing it to when you say December was hard??

i thought the science was alright.math was sooo easy… but reading was impossibleeeee

I wanna cry…I did well on the other sections but science…I had to guess on tha last few!!! ughhh

Same, I felt rushed on science.

The pendelum section… ****ing hard as hell.

lol yeah, i agree youwiththeface. I finished the mosquito one and was at the end of the conflicting viewpoints when I saw I didn’t have much time left. lol I was so scared. I blindly guessed on some of them.

I don’t think that the Science test in and of itself is incredibly difficult. Yes, it will probably be my lowest sub-score on the ACT overall this time, but that doesn’t mean that the reason for that is the test’s difficulty. My two, lackluster pennies:

The Science test gives almost all ACT takers loose stool, but that is chiefly because of it’s time limit, IMO. 35 mins for a 40 question test. When you have ADD like I do, you wish you had a unicorn. I like pancakes more than waffles, but they don’t make pancake irons. Sorry, I lost focus there. Anyway, the point is, the test doesn’t test your level of knowledge of physics, biology, chemistry, etc. but instead tests three things:
A. Your ability to decipher graphs and tables similar to the ones found in peer-reviewed scientific literature.
B. Your ability to answer equally cryptic questions using sometimes as many as three of the above simultaneously.
C. Your ability to perform A and B at a rate of ~1.4 questions per minute.

If they’d give you ten, even just five more minutes, I could easily increase my science score 6 points. But they won’t. I hate time limits.

Yeah, the timing was a killer. But you have to consider the advanced topics, too. Suppose there are really advanced topics one might not know. Although graphs and definitions are given, one will still be intimidated by the time limit. So basically, what makes science hard is the time limit.

This better be curved so -5/6 = 30-31
