Decent but inexpensive hotels near campus

I am driving down with my son for PittStart in early June. We are staying overnight. He will stay in the dorms, so I am looking for a close hotel for myself. Something within walking distance would be nice since I plan to check out the campus while he is off doing his orientation stuff and hanging out with other students.

Any suggestions?

When my daughter and I visited Pitt earlier this month, we stayed at the Hampton Inn. It’s about a mile away from campus (they do have a shuttle to the Pitt campus), the rates were reasonable for the middle of Pittsburgh(request the Pitt rate), the room was clean and comfortable and they provide a complementary breakfast.

I have also stayed at the Hampton Inn, it’s usually around 149 per night. Very clean and breakfast is included.

I am staying at the Holiday Inn on campus for Pitt Start. My rate was 180.00, but just dropped to 152.00.

Hope this helps.

We have stayed at Shady Side Suites. $119+ for one bedroom studio. Delightful room, nice neighborhood, free parking. About a mile walk to campus. No breakfast but small kitchen. We also stayed at the Best Western Park Hotel. Easy drive to Oakland. Pay 10-12 dollars for parking at Soldiers(?)

We have stayed at the Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn on campus as well as the Courtyard Marriott/Waterfront. They all had their good points as well as bad.

Thanks everyone! All the suggestions sound just about what I am looking for.

We just drove home Pitt today. D is home for the summer! Yay! Because we live 400 miles away, we need to stay overnight. This time we tried out the Residence Inn Marriott. It was lovely. Each room is like a mini suite, with a kitchen, pull out sofabed and real bed. Very comfy, and a beautiful view. Actually, it is my favorite hotel for a Pitt trip! The neighborhood is great too, very residential and quiet. So if you want to be near shops, this isn’t the one. Also, the Marriott has a Pitt shuttle. I think it’s free, but you should double check.

We have also stayed at the Holiday Inn Select on campus. Great location, also very nice. The Wyndham is okay, but my last choice of the three of them.

These are not really inexpensive, but they’re the only ones we have stayed in.

My family stayed at the Residence Inn when we visited a week ago. The room was terrific (like LurkNess described it), and the shuttle got us to campus in 4 minutes. I highly recommend it.
