Decent first quarter schedule?

This is what I have planned for my first quarter at UCSD:

MATH 20B
CSE 8A
CSE 8AL
Warren Writing 1
CSE 91

How good of a schedule is this for a CE/CS major? Workload? Rigor?

I might even minor in Economics later on.

Thanks!

holy crap dawg, you have over 4 months before you even register, and you will be receiving a recommended schedule sometime in the summer. just give yourself a break, enjoy senior year, and worry about this stuff later.

That’s quite a bit, most people only take 3 to 4 classes a quarter.

happyhappy: LOL I just wanna plan everything out now, so that I have a clear picture of what I want to take when I enter.

hopefullyokay: CSE 8AL is just a 2 unit lab course, which goes hand-in-hand with CSE 8A

You’re going to end up like my roommates (both are Computer Science and took a similar courseload), and now they have like, 2.3 GPAs.

i would suggest to follow the sample schedule thats on the course catalogue

rameezkhan - is it really that bad?! man…
Art is Melodic - I followed the exact same thing on the sample course doc. I just wanna know what ppl think of it lol.

we think that the recommended schedule is what you should do.

That’s fine lol. You will definitely be taking Math 20B and Warren Writing and at least 1 CSE intro class (probably programming which is I think the 8A course). Not sure what CSE 91 is though, but I’m guessing that’s the only class your recommended schedule will probably omit.

Hopefully programming comes natural to you like it does for some people.

^ Yeah agreed. Programming is pretty much you know it or you don’t.

cse 91 is a relatively easy class. its 3 hours of lecture a week + about 15 minutes of homework every week. its also p/np, and i dont think anyone fails…

cse 8/8l are the intro classes. i personally took cse 11, but from what i heard, the 8 series isn’t too bad. however you cant tell until you actually program. some people take about an hour to finish the program, but some take 3-4 hours

warren writing and math 20b will be quite hard and time consuming.

i think your schedule will be fine. cse 8l and cse 91 are easy and dont take up too much time so 5 classes should be doable

I personally think it’s too much for your first quarter (i only took 13 units so I could get myself situated). Also … enjoy your senior year, there is no point to be planning this **** out now.

Actually yeah, I would recommend easing up on the workload. WCWP and 20B together will be tough by itself.

First quarter: keep that courseload and drop 1-2 classes before the first two weeks are up after gauging the respective difficulty of each.

Took a near similar load.

CSE 8A/AL - Easy as hell. If you’re good at Java, this is no sweat. If you’re new, go to lecture and pay attention and you’ll surely pass with an A. This Fall it’s taught by Rick Ord and he’s AMAZING. (Although Beth Simon last Fall was also one of my favorites, too)

CSE 91 - Easy, P/NP 2-unit course. Go to lecture, listen, and do the hw and you’ll pass for sure.

Math 20B - Moderately easy until Taylor series, when I didn’t go to lecture. Just go to lecture. You could, however, take it Winter Quarter with a better curve, because all AP Calc AB passing students or BC w/ a 3 come in and take 20B, whereas new students take 20A in the Fall. I suggest instead of 20B, you take a GE because 8A, despite easy, will take up time. Beatles Music maybe?

WCWP 10A - I’m not in Warren, but my friends all say it’s easy to get a B, hard to get an A. This class depends on your TA, so suck it up.

^It’s funny cause the Warren Writing TAs say that you should get the same grade on the same paper with any TA.

I’m about to finish my first quarter at UCSD, ending up with a pretty good GPA.

For one, Warren Writing is known for being notorious in their grading, only a few people get in, and the class sizes are 15 students, so if you have early registration, go for it, if not, hope there’s a spot open.

Your schedule looks fine, I took 4 classes my first quarter, but ended up dropping a class due to conflicts, then I took 5 classes and now 3 for my spring.

I’d say your schedule is fine. Math 20B is a joke imho.
