Decent SSAT and OK-ish grades

My child got a 95% on his SSAT (ranging from a 99V to a 79Q), but the most recent grades range from an A- to a B- (with al other grades being a B+). Child attends a very rigorous private N-8 school. Can parents who have been through this let me know their thoughts on if the SSAT score will balance out the so-so grades (I’m guessing not so much, even though the school is tough)? The essays were good enough (at least I thought), child plays an unusual instrument because child likes it (like the oboe), plays sports although not varsity level, and is on the quiet side so interviews weren’t stunning. Child probably get reasonably good recommendations from school. Also, this child is a very nice person (even compared to sibling). We’ve applied to a wide range of schools, so I’m not worried about child not getting in anywhere, but we liked Middlesex, St. Mark’s and St. Andrew’s. I know we will find out soon enough, but I think I’ll be better prepared if veterans can let me know what to expect. Thank you.

His grades and scores are fine. Are you full pay? That is an extremely important factor, Where are you from? What is your racial/ethnic background? Your son sounds like an excellent candidate but without a strong hook so these other factors may matter.

This is really a “chances” post. No one here can tell you what to expect. If your child’s grades and SSAT are at or above the averages for the schools s/he applied to, s/he’s in the running and you will know for certain on M10. If people’s guesses will make you feel better, OK, but that’s all you’re getting, although @Center’s point about FP is (always) relevant to every school.

It sounds like you’ve cast a wide net and you’ve said you’re not worried that your child will come up empty-handed, so I’d say you’re in a good spot. Good luck.

His scores actually seem very good and well within the range of the most well known schools. The grades shouldn’t be too much of a deal, but I would work on getting them up as much as you can!

He could have Cs if he is a track star or URM. He can have straight As and still not get in without a real hook.
