Essays: Very, very good. Common App about how my family and I faced poverty and homelessness when we came to America and how those hardships inspire me.
Supplement essay good in my opinion. Still need to get in reviewed by teachers. ALSO, I am submitting an additional essay about helping build a school in Sudan for victims of the Darfur genocide.
Teacher Recommendation: One is fantastic, the other is also very good, wish it was a bit longer.
Counselor Rec: Great I guess, she said she wrote a two pager, which she seldom does.
Additional Rec: Peer evaluation from a very close peer of mine.

Race: I am African American (specifically Sudanese).
School: Public, only one applying to Bowdoin College

Please chance me!! I would very much appreciate it!

Highly likely. Your ECs are stellar.

It sounds like you’re a great candidate Khadim, good luck!

Thanks guys! I appreciate all of the help! Are you two applying ED 2?

I think you are an excellent candidate - the type Bowdoin is looking for. good luck.

You sound like a stellar candidate and incredibly interesting person. In my opinion, they would be remiss not to admit you. And all of your service work sounds fascinating-- I can’t believe you helped to build a school in Sudan! I helped with one in Mali but given the current situation in Sudan I’d be really interested to travel/volunteer there. Anyways, good luck! Maybe, if by some stroke of luck I get in, I’ll see you there!

No, I’m probably applying ED I next year.

Thank you all for your praises! I appreciate it. I am worried a little, however, that my GPA might be a bit low for their standards. I don’t know what my GPA is unweighted, but I’m sure it’s not a perfect 4.0 and maybe around 3.6-3.7? What do you guys think?

Also, taking into account the race issue… will being Sudanese/African help me a lot in the admissions process? Does Bowdoin really look into diversity?

cottoncandy, thank you so much! It really was an awesome experience to go back to my home country and help out. The entire project was just unbelievable, and the children were amazing. Mali sounds interesting too! Are you applying ED2 as well?

Yeah, that sounds absolutely incredible! Had you been back there before?

(Clearly) I’m not an admissions officer, but I would definitely say that being more “diverse” would help you in the admissions process. In my opinion, your diverse experiences and proven leadership, extracurriculars and everything else would get you in regardless, but I think that being Sudanese would give you an extra edge.

I would say your GPA is probably a bit lower than average, but it shouldn’t be a problem. Clearly you’ve taken a demanding curriculum and it also helps that you’re the only one applying from your school. (I have a 3.7ish GPA too, which is right around the average accepted at my school if that helps at all)

I’m going the regular decision route, but I REALLY love Bowdoin. I actually withdrew my early application from Brown because I couldn’t bear the thought of giving up the chance at Bowdoin-- the community and general atmosphere there is fantastic. And the food ROCKS. But my fear of commitment is preventing me from applying ED2 so I’m just crossing my fingers for the spring!!

I’ve go to Sudan almost every other year to visit family. But when the opportunity came up to help the children, I took it.

And yeah, hopefully it helps me! The GPA thing is like the only thing that’s bumming me out.

Hopefully we both get in. How many from your school are applying? And that’s crazy! You withdrew your Brown App?!

I wanna talk more, PM me

Hmm. regarding your worry over “low” gpa, I would not be. As an A-/B+ student, Ive been told by numerous guidence councilors that colleges like Bowdoin are looking for the B student with rigourous course load because it demostrates effort. Moreover, your EC convey the fact that you are multifacet rather than one dimensions. I did ED1 but congrats on your decision on ED2!

Thanks a lot for the information yohten! Did you submit any test scores? Hopefully we both get in  the beautiful, small, intimate campus feel will be awesome!

Hope I get in!

Regarding test scores, i got a combined 1300 in math 1 and us history on the SAT 2. I sent those in, but they arent great. I have been obessive about Bowdoin; to the extent that friends find it highly unhealthy. Best of luck getting in, though I wouldnt be too worried with credentials like that…what more could you have done…not every can be valdictorian…if they were that be a problem…

yohten, I know what you mean and I agree 100%. I hope you get in and quite frankly this is one thing about Bowdoin that appealed to me the most, that you’ll actually know other people. The campus/student body size seems perfect, I would feel like more than a number. I wish you luck too, hopefully I’ll get to meet you in Maine during a freshman visitation weekend or something :)

Khadim:

The State of Maine hosts several private Liberal Arts Colleges that maintain an underground rail system in word if not deed. You opportunities are bright and singularly stupendous. You are on the Right Track.

Keep on trucking, for the Bowdoin Polar Bear mascots are ‘pawin’ for YOU!

HorseRadish (aside from having an awesome CC name) that was one of the most clever/uplifting things someone has ever said to me  Thank you!

Are you a student at Bowdoin?

Hey, I’m not going ED2, I applied ED1. Best of luck with the application

did u get innn

lylukas97, this thread is from 2009, but if you use CC’s search feature, the OP later posted being admitted EDII in February, 2010.
