Deciding between ACT and SAT

D21 took the PSAT in the fall and got 610 EBRW 620 Math, 1230.

She took PreAct this spring and got a 32 Composite (32 Math, 33 Science, 26 English, 35 Reading). Just got scores today.

Both tests were completely cold. As in so cold that she didn’t really know what sections there were or how long the tests were until the night before. Absolutely no studying or practice tests. Both of them she did pretty well on the timing. I think PSAT she went a bit too fast on the math. PreACT she pretty much ended every section close to the end time but never felt rushed.

I’m thinking that since the SAT/ACT concordance tables put that PreACT score as 1420, that’s a big enough gap she should just focus on ACT and not worry about SAT. The only concern is the PSAT, but she may be too low to get that up to NMSQ anyway.

Thoughts?

She seems like an Act girl to me.

Sounds like it.

But now that she’s familiar with the format, she could take a sample test of each under actual test conditions just to confirm.

ACT is a no-brainer. And yes, highly unlikely she’d be able to raise her score enuf for NM

ACT

A new consideration - Where is your daughter on the “disadvantaged”/“privileged” spectrum? If more “disadvantaged”, lean toward the SAT ; if more “privileged”, lean toward the ACT. College Board has now “clarified” that there is no adversity score, just an “Environmental Context Dashboard”, but this is still a factor that could impact an application.
