Deciding between CSU East Bay, and UCSB (philosophy major)

I’ve been accepted to CSUEB and UCSB. I’m from the Santa Barbara area so I know it well and have visited the school several times (and found it lovely), but I currently live in Oakland in a very comfortable living situation and am in a serious relationship. Does anybody have any input on whether or not it might be worthwhile to relocate to Santa Barbara for the next two years, considering these factors?

My boyfriend really doesn’t want me to move away and I don’t want to either, but after sitting in on some classes, I love the more rigorous academics of UCSB and I’m afraid I won’t get the challenge I’m looking for at East Bay. I’ve already visited SFSU and didn’t really feel comfortable there. It’s an option but I’ve pretty much ruled it out.

Thanks

i’d suggest you stretch yourself and go to SB. If your relationship is meant to be, this won’t be the end of it.

Please do not ever make life altering decisions based on a serious relationship while young. Married absolutely, a relationship in your early years absolutely not. Santa Barbara isn’t far, if its meant to be your relationship will survive.

From what I’ve heard CSUEB is not a challenging environment. I know a few people who went there and wish they had better options. There are certain reasons I might pick a CSU over UC but this would not qualify as one of them. Personally, having visited a couple times it felt like high school 2.0 and in your shoes I would head to UCSB.

@cvg6475 What did you decide? I agree with the above posters, a strong relationship will survive a bit of distance, do what is best for your education and your future, and communicate openly and frequently with your partner.
