Deciding Between NYU/ CU Boulder / Purdue / UWashington Computer Science

Hello All,

I just got my final decisions from all of my schools and wanted to know what everyone thinks the best option is.

I was admitted to NYU, CU Boulder and Purdue Engineering and waitlisted to Uwashington.

What do you think is the best option for a Computer Science Undergrad is?

Admitted: NYU, CU Boulder, Purdue
Waitlisted: UWashington
Denied: UCLA, USC

University of Washington CS is outstanding. Then Purdue Engineering, then CU-Boulder.

Thank you! Wondering why not NYU?

I know nothing about NYU for CS.

I have the same problem. It seems as though some value NYU CS highly while others do not.

NYU recently bought Polytechnic University and renamed it Tandon. In some respects, you are paying for and NYU degree but getting a polytechnic university education.

Edit: Never-mind, It looks like NYU had its own independent CS program before the merger.

Check how difficult it will be to get into CS at each school.

Net price at each?

@WildestDream I’ve heard that too. Although they’ve had a CS, it’s still under the Tandon School of Engineering. Would that be a problem? Lots of people seem to think Tandon is a poor choice but it still seems selective.

@ucbalumnus At CU, NYU, and Purdue getting into cs shouldn’t be a problem. At UW, I wouldn’t be a direct admit coming off the waitlist, so a bit harder.

Cost favors CU but I would be able to pay NYU if I had the desire to go.

Cost:
CU-Boulder: 20k (In-State + Scholarship)
UWashington: 52k
Purdue: 42k
NYU: 60k

It won’t be a “problem.” It’s that NYU is very expensive and tends to be stingy with aid. I would not go to NYU for CS unless you receive significant aid from them that would make the price comparable to the other schools you listed, which have stronger CS reputations.

Boulder. It is much nicer place to live than NYC or Indiana. It offers CS as both an engineering degree or an Arts and Sciences degree. It has a buffalo swimming pool. It’s a fun place with 300 days of sunshine each year.

What are the chances of your getting off the waitlist at UW?

As far as living, you can’t get much more different than your three choices. Have you spent any significant time in NYC? Living in NY is not for everyone. Boulder is gorgeous, right at the base of the Flatirons, and it’s a great college town. Purdue is its own kettle of fish. I’ve never been there, but I’ve heard the town is less than interesting, but it may very well have the best CS department of the three.

Another vote for Purdue. It has an excellent national and international reputation. Yes, West Lafayette isn’t the most exciting town, but it is a safe town and only 60 minutes from Indianapolis (a shuttle runs between the 2) and 2 hours from Chicago.

@WildestDream Interesting, If all schools were at the same price level, what would you chose?

@ChezCurie Honestly, not sure about my chances. I’ve heard its close to impossible so I’m considering appealing and sending more letters of rec with an email.

I would definitely favor UWashington if I got in.

I used to live in NYC and moved to Boulder so I know I could survive in either place. Though I agree Boulder is an amazing place to live.

@LatinoSoccer2020 How do you feel about West Lafayette? Have you visited?

@ChezCurie Have not, but part of me wants to get away from Boulder, atleast for a few years.

@LatinoSoccer2020 Can you fly to IN and see if you’d like it?
