Hmm…after reading what UCBalumnus said, I realized I misread the quick facts. Is OSU worth 10K more?

Ohio State University is not worth more than Alabama, UNLESS you happen to want to live in larger city. OSU is in Columbus which is about 750,000 people, while Alabama is in Tuscaloosa which is a smaller town of about 93,000.

OSU engineering is perhaps ranked higher than Alabama engineering, BUT rankings are notoriously flawed. I would ignore rankings. Unless there is some program there which is not offered at Alabama, there is no reason to prefer OSU for academics.

If you look more closely, I think you will find that the cost difference is closer to $15,000 total, over four years. You get the $2500 per year scholarship at 'Bama (totaling $10,000 over four years), plus tuition is about $1500 higher per year at OSU (totaling about $4500 over four years).

Or is that difference more like $30,000 over four years… $20,000 for OSU per year, minus $12,500 for 'Bama is $7500 per year… times 4 is $30,000. Make sure you understand the true cost!

Since you are from a tropical climate, Alabama might be more comfortable for you. Ohio gets bitterly cold in the winter with lots of snow – tons of snow. This past winter we spent most of January and February below the freezing mark, with many of those days below zero degrees Fahrenheit. Brrrrr… :-S

Thank you! Now I’m completely ready to enroll

You have one more thing to learn before you can enroll at Alabama… you will need to learn how to say “Roll Tide !” with appropriate enthusiasm !!

These are both stat schools with decent run of the mill educations and prestige. I wouldn’t take out student loans to pay for either, but if you can afford to attend and graduate with no debt, I would take the cheapest of the two.

Roll Tide…it will soon slip off your tongue without thinking! :)

""Thank you all. I have chosen Alabama. Will send my deposits ASAP. mom2collegekids, do you know which resident halls are for engineers? Where can i find info on this “”

Ok…if you want a non-honors dorm for eng’g, then that is Bryant Hall. It is a very nice res hall and has an excellent dining hall (but you can go to any dining hall that you want).

If you want an honors dorm, there isn’t one just for eng’g, but I can tell you that many/most of the males in honors are in eng’g or STEM so very likely your suitemates would be eng’g or STEM. The honors dorms are 4 bedroom, 2 bath supersuites that share a living room and kitchenette. Each bedroom is private so you dont share a bedroom ((so no sexiling!)) BTW…Bryant is also set up this way.

The honors dorms are on the north side of campus and is very quiet. Bryant is on the east side of campus and is also quiet.

You need to set up Bama Bound as well for orientation.

…and if you want student football tix then pay attention to the sign up date. Tix are $5 per game for students and are sold in sets. If interested, you’ll sign up around end of May/early June…dont miss this if you want some tix. Your account will be billed if you buy a set, so you dont pay right then. (other sports events are free for students)

Even if you’re not into football, going to a couple of games can be a way to enjoy some school spirit. Game days are amazing…the music, the band, the dancing, etc…even if you dont like football the entertainment can be fun.
