Deciding factors? Help!

Hello all, I am currently a senior from nothern NJ, with some serious concerns about which schools to apply. Some factors I am relying on include, but are not limited to:

reasonable distance from major city
decent reputation, but not a top school (keep im mind, not the best student)
Either east coast or west coast (preferably east)
Lots of clubs and activities
liberal and diverse student body
environment oriented? (LOVE the outdoors - hiking, rock climbing, ANYTHING)
good study abroad programs
oriented toward my majors

^As of now, I am hoping to major in philosophy and/or political science, maybe a minor in environmental studies?

Also, I plan on doing some traveling after graduation this year (cross-country road trip), and am wondering how accomodating schools are with deferring enrollment.

Schools I will surely apply to include:

Rutgers - been there numerous times, great academics but not sure about the environment
SUNY NP - love the atmosphere, not sure about academic programs
Appalachian State - ? kind of a throw in
Possibly UMass Amherst

Any other advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

what are your stats like?

University of Vermont in Burlington is two hours drive from Montreal.

I love SUNY New Paltz.....sounds like it meets the criteria. I was just there this past weekend looking for housing for my son who is transferring there. It was a gorgeous day and the town was bustling with activity. We had a great lunch at the Main Street Bistro. The fall is just so beautiful there, the foliage was amazing.

Well, unfortunately, I am not the greatest student. Some stats include:

GPA of only 3.2
Class rank 110 out of 265 (top half)
SATs - (retaking in december hopefully)
Math 490 :(
Reading 590
Writing 650

APs and Honors
Government and Politics AP
Spanish 4 Honors

Extras
4 year Varsity track athlete, in which I have won many awards including 1st team all conference, 2nd team all county
4 years of nature club, (Head Officer this year)
Eagle Scout + Bronze Palm
Many art related awards
Have written many feature stories and articles for the school newspaper
2 years swimming (silver times in breast and freestyle)
Lots and lots and job experience
lots of community service hours

Not very impressive, but what kind of schools should I be looking for??
Thanks!
