Deciding for Computer Engineering in California

With the SIR date just a few days away, I'm still having trouble deciding on which college I'd like to attend. I've been accepted to both Cal Poly and UCSB for Computer Engineering, as well as UCSD as an undeclared (didn't get into CE there).

I've toured all three places and really like the feel of both Cal Poly and UCSD. I wasn't a big fan of UCSB's campus, but they appear to have a solid program. Right now, I'm trying to evaluate between the three schools but running into a few issues.

For one, I'd really like to consider UCSD, but since CE is impacted there's no assurance I'll be able to get into my major later on. There are no statistics on the success rate in doing this because it's CE's first year impacted, so I'd be entering blind as far as my chances. This is a critical issue to me, since I'm confident that that's what I want to major in. I'd consider committing to Poly, but I've heard some bad things about getting into graduate school from there. Overall, where do my best chances for enjoyment of college and professional opportunities lie? Thanks in advance for weighing in with any responses.

I don’t think you will have a problem at Cal Poly. I’ve known people graduated there and went on to get a Phd from UCLA. Although, you need to keep very high grades there.
BTW, I called UCSD, there is almost 3/1 ratio for Computer Engineering vs Computer Science. I think Computer Engineering is not as impacted as Computer Science but if you are admitted to Computer Engineering, you could easily change to Computer Science, hence I think the reason you was admitted as undeclared.

Does this low ratio for CS mean I might have an easier time transferring into the CS major rather than CE? I’d prefer to have the hardware background that CE would offer as well, but ultimately where I’d like to end up on the career side is in software. Essentially, I’m not sure whether I should take the risk and commit to UCSD only to find out I can’t do what I would like to. My main objective is not as much about where I go, but coming out of school in four years with the degree I want.

@thejoelster,
I miswrote the 3/1 ratio refers to Computer Science to Computer Engineering, not the other way around. According to a person I talked to the CSE department has roughly 1900 students with 1400 in CS and the rest in CE.
I think with that ratio, it seems easier to get into CE than CS. I know for sure one will transfer out of CE to CS. But it depends on what grades you will get at UCSD, you have more chance to transfer into CE if your grades are high.
