D has applied to five summer programs. One has already admitted her, asking for a nonrefundable deposit by this weekend, but we'd like to see if she gets into any of the others. Has anyone else had this situation? How can we get the first one to extend the deadline, so that we can at least see if she gets into any of the others? I think most won't tell us for at least another few weeks.

Have you called the other programs to explain your predicament?

When my daughter was in this predicament a few years ago, she called the other program and asked, and they gave her an expedited decision, so she was able to make the deadline.

That seems like a good idea; but could it backfire? If we ask the other program(s), or even just the ones that she really wants to go to, might they say No just because we asked for an expedited response?

ASk for an extension from program #1. Ask for expedited decision from other ones. Maybe they will meet in the middle. Our S is in the same predicament. Program #1 (with partial scholarship) wants decision by Fri, but program #2 won’t decide until March. He can’t afford program #2 unless they give full scholarship - which may be unlikely. So…he may just go ahead with program #1, or he may just decide to stay home this summer and get a JOB!

re the question: in a word: NO

We have had this happen numerous times over the years, sometimes the early responding programs will extend their deadline by a week or two, but it has not usually been enough to allow us to wait for the other programs to respond, it never hurts to ask though :)

Good luck with that! I’m sure it differs from program to program and the best you can do is ask very politely. My daughter had that situation last year and they extended her decision date a wee bit but she ended up turning down that very excellent opportunity for a another that she hadn’t even auditioned for yet following her voice teacher’s request. It worked out in the end, but definitely not a choice for the faint of heart.

Well, I contacted a couple of the programs that we are still waiting to hear from, and I will also see if I can get the decision date extended from #1. Thanks to everyone for the advice, and I will share what happens.

So, #1 has given an extension, and we have heard from one of the others with an expedited decision of YES! So thank you to everyone who gave advice; it obviously was the right thing to do.

Congrats!!! I’m so glad it worked out for your daughter.

musicalkids…We just had the same issue with the same outcome–and I bet at least one of the same programs in LA? Our issue is now waiting to see about money…Im fearful begging for early review hurt my son’s chance for any scholarship money–clearly he wants to go to the program.

@countertenormom: How did you find out about the early decision? Was it a personal e-mail message? What was the wording and who was it from? That might help you to figure out if it is worth asking about scholarship money.

Son got email acceptance today…again, wont’ hear about scholarship money for a few weeks. Boy, they let you get all excited first I guess.
