i was wondering if any current NU student could tell me how often you get to perform in front of the class (aka do your scene/mono/song in the mt class). Like once a week/more/less? Im curious b/c i was shocked when i visited by how large the class sizes were.

Hi AMTC—I asked my DD who is studying Theater at NU to respond to your question-I hope it helps you in your decision:
Response:

Hey, I am a sophomore theatre major at NU, and I love the program. I am not in MT, but I have quite a few friends who are, and they think the program is great. I think what is unique about NU is that it is an incredible theatre program, but if you are interested in other things - either within theatre or outside of it, the school allows you to pursue those interests. For example, we have an amazing student theatre program that includes about 8 student theatre companies that each put on their own season each year, which means that if you are interested, or want to explore: directing, producing, writing (We have a student written musical, Waa-Muu, every year, and there is a student theatre company that only produces student written works), stage mangaging, ect, you can do that at NU, which is not something most other schools offer. Also, even if you are just interested in acting, all of these shows means that it is totally possible to perform your first year (not something you can do at NYU). As for class sizes, the one large class I have taken in the theatre department was the freshmen lecture that every freshman theatre major takes at the same time (so there about 100 kids in the class). Other than that, all my classes have been between 12/15 and 25(on the large side).

The MT program doesn’t start until sophomore year, and you get your acting teacher sophomore year as well. From my experience in acting, we perform in front of the class quite often. For example, in my acting class, we recently did a monologue/audition workshop where we each got to do a mock audition, and then we work-shopped each person’s pieces.

Wow! My mouth is watering with excitement! I totally can not wait! How many quarters does the freshman lecture take up and what types of classes can be taken as a freshman?
