Deciding Reach Schools

I'm a senior in high school and I'm looking for suggestions on what reach schools I should apply to based on my credentials.

I'm interested in Economics, Psychology, and Engineering.

GPA (UW) - 3.71
SAT - Math: 680 CR: 640 W: 600
Rank - 75/348
AP's - US History: 4, Psych - IP, Music Theory - IP

EC's:
Academic Decathlon - Vice President
Marching Band
Honors Jazz Band
Honors Wind Band
Tae Kwon Do - Black Belt, Volunteer Instructor
Retreat Leader for various youth programs
Volunteer at Church (100's of hours, including Eucharistic Minister)
Key Club for a year
A few summer jobs

Awards:
Gold Medal (Essay) Academic Decathlon State Finals 2011
Academic Awards Program 3.75 or higher GPA (weighted)
Bronze Medal 2011 Tae Kwon Do Tournament
Numerous awards in music

I'm also a dual citizen between Ireland and America. I'm the only American citizen in my family, and I'll be the first one to go to college. I'll hopefully be able to use this in my essay.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

There are many schools that would be glad to have you but you need to be more specific about what you want:

1) size of school (small liberal arts college, large public university, etc…)
2) location (what part of the country, how far from home, specifics related to weather or geographic features
3) academic areas of interest (what do you plan to study, career goals)
4) how much can you afford? do you need financial aid? merit aid?
5) culture (jock, preppy, artsy, quirky, intellectual, granola, hip, etc…)
6) deal-breakers (religious, single sex, frats, etc…)

Once we have this info, we can give you suggestions that are likely to be a better fit.

^^and, also, what do you think your match and safeties are…

1) Size: 2000+
2) East Coast
3) Interests: Economics, Psychology, and Engineering
4) I’m uncertain of an exact amount that I can afford, but I think it is enough that I probably won’t receive a lot of financial aid
5) A mixture of cultures
6) Co-ed schools

So far I know that I’m applying to Rutgers, Umass Amherst, Pitt, and NYU

any suggestions?

You could try applying to one or two of the “lower” Ivies, although these would be pretty darned high reaches due to your SAT I score, but there’s no harm in trying. Carnegie Mellon sounds like it’d be a pretty good reach school for you.

Carnegie Mellon would be a pretty reachy reach. NYU is a reach.

I suggest GW and U. Maryland as reaches, and U. Delaware as a match.

Eh, a reach’s called a reach for a reason. IMO pick a few high grabs to go with your high matches and pray to the devil. xD

Colby, Connecticut College, Trinity College, as matches
University of Rochester as low reach, Hamilton as low reach (they are sat optional and your grades are good, esp if you do ED2), Colgate as reach
Lehigh as high match, Lafayette as match
Boston College as reach, BU as match
Univ of Richmond as lowish to med reach, Univ of Wisconsin Madison
some are not as large as you want (1,800 vs 2000) or on the East Coast , but take a look

thanks everyone!

The schools you’re planning to apply to aren’t the “small liberal arts” that many are suggesting. What kind of school do you actually want? Colby (which would actually be a reach), Trinity (high match), Conn (high match) are all under 2000, and definitely small, more intimate schools–not the big bustling atmosphere you might be looking for. You might need to do a little more research to focus your thoughts a little!
