Deciding which school to learn engineering at

I am between 3 schools for my final decision: Miami University, University of Iowa, and University of Missouri. I have yet to apply to all 3, but it will be a small stretch for Miami University. I just came back from an engineering camp at Missouri and decided that I would like to go to college for engineering. I am asking for opinions on which of those schools will be the best college for engineering while also giving me a great college experience. Here's a little insight of what I think of the colleges. I have visited all 3 colleges, and liked the campuses of Miami University and Missouri the best (Miami a little better). I will probably be joining a fraternity in college. I also play lacrosse and would hope to go to a college that offers some form of it (I don't believe Missouri does). Another issue is cost. I would have to get some loans if I went to Miami University. Please let me know what you think would be the best decision!

YOU can only borrow $5500 for freshman year. If you need to borrow more than that (not a good idea), you’d need to have willing and QUALIFIED cosigners who can qualify EACH year.

Do you have the stats for big merit scholarships? MiamiU does give some big awards for high stats.

What is your situation? How much will your parents pay? What are your test scores and GPA?

What is your home state? The OOS costs at some of these schools is quite high.

While I like Missouri a lot, I would have thought you might also want to look at Missouri University of Science and Technology as well. In all honesty, it probably has a better rep than Missouri for Engineering.

“YOU can only borrow $5500 for freshman year. If you need to borrow more than that (not a good idea), you’d need to have willing and QUALIFIED cosigners who can qualify EACH year.”

I have never heard anything like that before. Do you mind telling me where you got this information? Also, i would probably have about 30,000 a year funded for college. I would not be getting any scholarship money from miami due to low gpa.

I would rather not go to a school where everybody is an engineer.

Look at the Financial Aid forum on this site. Also look here: [FinAid | Loans | Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org/loans/studentloan.phtml)

What is your home state and what are your stats?

I have never heard anything like that before. Do you mind telling me where you got this information

lol…I got that info from the federal gov’t. They’re the source for student loans that don’t require co-signers. Other sources will require qualified co-signers.

This shouldn’t be some surprise if you think about it. Why would any bank lend money to students who don’t have the income/assets to be qualified borrowers??? The prospect of a college degree and job years from now is NOT ENOUGH for any bank to trust…too many kids drop out or never get adequately employed.

Also, i would probably have about 30,000 a year funded for college. I would not be getting any scholarship money from miami due to low gpa

Are you saying that your parents have said that they will pay $30k per year?

What is your GPA?

Why are you trying to decide between these schools if you have not applied to them yet?
You don’t know now where you will get in and what will be the best FA offer…

I am from Illinois and I have a 3.25 gpa on a 4 scale. I have a 27 composite on the act. 23 reading, 24 science, 27 English, 33 math.

I am simply getting an idea of where I want to go so I know which schools to apply to. All I am asking for is that people would answer my first question which was: “I am asking for opinions on which of those schools will be the best college for engineering while also giving me a great college experience.”

Yes. They will be giving me 30,000 a year. And are you saying that there is no possible way I could go to Miami because I can only borrow 5,500 per year? I’m sorry I am not very educated in financial aid.

What about SIU? They have engineering and with your stats you should have a good shot at scholarships. [SIU Undergraduate Academic Scholarships | Incoming Freshmen](http://scholarships.siu.edu/types/freshmen/index.html)
They are also ABET accredited. [Accredited Programs details](http://main.abet.org/aps/AccreditedProgramsDetails.aspx?OrganizationID=108)

My gpa is lower than my ability. That’s why I would like to challenge myself by getting into an engineering program that will be more challenging and I’m not thinking SIU’s engineering would be up to par with the 3 schools I have already mentioned.

anybody else have any input on which school would have the best engineering program while also giving me a great college experience?

UIUC has one of the best engineering programs in the country. They’re in state for you too, so you’d get in state rates. The engineering program there is fairly competitive though.

It’s certainly worth a look.

Iowa State and Minnesota may be affordable even at out-of-state list price. No idea on admission chances, though.

South Dakota State is significantly cheaper than the price limit you list.

Of course, look at the various in-state public schools.

A few of the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-19.html#post16145676</a> may be available (Howard and Prairie View A&M as is, some others may be if you raise your ACT or SAT score).

IMO your GPA and ACT are comparable. Engineering at an ABET accredited school is rigorous, no matter which school it is. And engineering grads at the schools you mentioned don’t get paid any more than engineering grads from SIU in the same field. You’re letting your prestige indicator get the better of you.

I wouldn’t be able to get in the engineering program there. All I am asking is a decision between the 3 schools I have already mentioned

Have you tried posting in the forums for each college? You might get more feedback there…

Um, OP? You might want to choose the school among your three with the best English department. From the title of your thread, it sounds like you could do with a little of that too.
