Decision date differences

Can anyone give me the rationale behind releasing decisions all on the same day?

One admissions officer said it was because they didn't "have the class finalized until right before each release". If that were the case they why do other colleges have no problem with rolling admissions?

Also, at least some of the schools with hard deadlines send out "likely letters" (including the one that gave me the answer). That proves that for at least some of the admits their decision has been finalized. Why not just send letters out if that is the case?

The eight Ivies + MIT have several agreements among themselves. These include agreed upon notification dates and other deadlines. This avoids trying to one-up a potential competitor by getting decisions out ahead of them. Creates a little more order…

MIT doesn’t have an agreement with the ivies because it’s releasing the decision on Pi day.

^Maybe T26E4 doesn’t mean an agreement on the decision date; just an agreement on going about releasing the decisions and related things.
