I have been accepted to several schools, and their programs fill up fast. But I have to wait until April to hear from my top school, UPenn. Is it safe to put a deposit in one school and then pull out to go for another if it's as early as April/May? Or do I have to go to that school once I place a deposit? (I'm aware of the money loss in doing so, but for UPenn it's worth it)

Don't you have until a certain date to send in the deposit? If you dont hear from Penn by one week before that date, then send the deposit and forfeit it if you are accepted at Penn later

Some deposits are not refundable..so be careful. And as the previous poster already mentioned, you might have time to wait.

Thanks guys, but now I have a new problem. I got into the honors college. I have an rsvp asap to do...

Which honors college? Penn State? I don't think Honors Colleges are all they are cracked up to be. Whenever I hear someone is attending an Honors Program at a college, I think "They probably could have gotten into a better college." I would send in the deposit and then forfeit the deposit if you get into U Penn.

Other than worrying if you will get your deposit back, some of my D's acceptances stated that at the time of sending in your deposit, you should withdraw all other apps. Do read your acceptance letters carefully.

Well it doesn't say anything like that on it. But George Mason's program is one of the best, right up there with Penn State, when it comes to state schools. And I get what you mean about them not being "all-that," but when you have a very limited money source, sometimes a ten thousand dollar tuition and an honors college are a lot more plausible than forty thousand dollars in a regular private school. I know that's stupid of me to say, since I might be going to UPenn, but I must admit, I'd sell my soul for UPenn. So I haven't exactly figured out how to pay for that one. :D

I fully understand the money issue. If you get in, U Penn will help make it affordable for your family through gift aid, loans, work study, and so on. Why does George Mason have such an early deadline? Did you apply early decision? Is the deadline just for the Honors College? Why don't they adhere to the May 1 universal deadline? Do they have rolling admissions? If you accept the GM offer, be sure you are not promising to forego acceptance at U Penn. The early RSVP does not make sense to me. The Honors College at George Mason would be a great place to spend four years. But, I hope you get a chance at your first choice.
