Decision is in!!

tennis: no, stop freaking out! hate to be blunt, but they're trying to read thousands of applications right now, NOBODY said everyone from here on out is defferred. they are not going to defer someone with a 35 ACT.

dude i was talking to this kid from san fran this year he said everyone from his school gets 1s and 2s on ap's and he has like a 1800 sat and he's got a really good chance at berkeley, cause his school still sends a lot there every year. Berkeley may be harder to get into OOS than Stanford, but in-state the UCs are not all that difficult. I think you are overestimating the difficulty of IS admissions.

Our valedictorian last year had a 2250 SAT and 4.7 GPA, and he was denied admission to Berkeley. I have a brother there now, and the year he graduated, HIS val was denied. In fact, everyone who got into Cal was denied from UCLA and vice versa that year. It isn't overestimated. I really doubt that school sends "several" kids per year with an 1800. Does it EVER happen? sure, but Cal tries to bring in a diverse student body, and most of those less competitive spots are given to first gen. college students/low income ppl.

UCs are reaaally weird then..
from what I've heard, they have a simple formula using GPA and SAT score, and that formula counts for a lot in an application. What's weird though, is that VC's post seems to counter that (2250 4.7 vale rejected is a little.. strange)

on the other hand, I know a korean kid here in MA who got into UCLA last year with a 3.6 2170 and no apparent hook.

That just goes to tell you how much of a crap shoot it all is..

hey everyone! fiiirst post here!...this thread made me sign-up.

Going back to a comment made earlier.

i too, know people who have gotten in. one person had a 21 ACT and a 3.8 GPA. it makes me sick when everyone thinks that standarized tests scores molds how a student will perform. This student is an EXCEPTIONAL, let me repeat, EXCEPTIONAL student. I know people with EXCEPTIONAL standarized tests scores who suuuuck academically. which is more important? Or even people who have high tests scores as well as high GPAs but in NO way were able to perform at U of M.

I know another person who got into michigan with a 22 ACT not sure of this persons GPA. but yeah...

U of M is not lowering thier standards, they are just recognizing the possible potential in EVERY student & giving them a chance. Yes these people may have had low standarized tests and what not and were accepted. But the key is, now that they are accepted can they stay in?
Let me remind you, those with the highest test scores and the highest high school GPAs are not always the smartest of the bunch nor are they in any way guaranteed that they can perform well at a college level.

however, i hope you all find what you are looking for at any college which chose to pursue.

Welcome...glad you wanted in. As you can see we are a lively bunch and we welcome devil's advocacy...

That said I think that GPA, high school course rigor, and performance IN SCHOOL for the 3 years preceding college (AKA how good of an academic student you are right before you go to college) SHOULD BE the foremost criteria of wheter or not you get in. If they're not looking for academic performance...what are they looking for?

Also, the standardized tests are important (some say more so than GPA) because they put everyone on a level playing field...apples to apples...as much as CAN be done. Sure stats show a kid with phenominal test scores but low GPA might be lazy...and kids with a super high GPA and mediocre test scores might not be in the most challenging school

If I were a better, I'd but my money on a kid with a 3.8 high school GPA and 34 SAT's over a kid with 22 ACT and a 3.2...that's common sense.

This comes from a girl with Not so phenominal test scores or GPA (as far as the Michigan CC boards go) But props to the kids who have them...its no coincidence...

Is U of M really "giving everyone a chance" if they accept instate kids with 22 on the ACT and deny out of state kids with 30..I think not.

Well I understand the IS-OOS quotas, and they are only fair-MI residents pay the taxes, so they want the benefits. But what I don't get is the huge gap between applicants they are accepting.

caramel08, tests ARE important, because they level the playing field, but also bc at some point students will be applying to grad school, where they have to take the LSAT, MCAT, etc. Michigan wants its students to get into top grad schools, so it reflects well their undergrad education.

y7bbb6: true, UCs, esp. the top ones, are known to be crapshoots. Big ones. Many people believe they know what UC schools accept which applicants, and accept/deny them based off that. For ex., UCLA will deny an Berkeley admit, and vice versa. Only the really elite students get into both.

i bet being an adcom is an interesting job lol.

I've met a lot of really smart in-state kids here. A lot of them were accepted to the ivies and other elite schools, but chose Michigan because, let's face it, you just don't pass up the chance to get a top 25 education at a fraction of the cost of other top schools.

i still haven't heard, and i sent mine out on oct. 11th. Where on the site does it say? I looked under credentials and application status, but it doesn't say anything. Did another link turn up when you found out?

Yeah, there will be a link next to credentials and app status that says "view decision"....obvious.

^ how many times has that been posted???? :(
