Decision is in!!

wash u: check out the other post....We beat you: 10/18 have heard nothing yet!!!!

Wash...depends on your stats. If you were kind of borderline (like me) It's a possibility. Thry had my stuff all in October 30 (I'm sure they had it before but that's when they recorded it). If your application is stong and in keeping with the other acceptees (oos/or in-state) you're probably OK. I gave myself 20-25% acceptance 25% Rejected outright and 50% chance of deferral. I don't think EA helps the borderline/stretch applicant (they do say applying early doesn't give you a leg up...just gets it out of the way). So nothing lost nothing gained...

i beat you all...

10/08

and still nothing..

not that this is a game i particularly want to win at...

does anyone know whether mich looks at the SATs out of 2400 or 1600..if they look at both, is one score any more important than the other?

I was really counting on getting into Mich but boohoo I got a slim little envelope in the mail today and I started swearing and ripping it up hahaha.

Deferrrred

washu: you could still be accepted, but given your loww GPA, i'd say chances are you'll be deferred.

tennis: 2400, all sections given equal weight, with the possible exception being engineering, in which case math is expected to be strongest or very good.

beat you all(tied with one) 10/08 and nothing!

deferred today by mail=(
what is the %age of ppl accepted from being deferred
now do they wait until the regular deadline (in jan or something) to review my app again
or when do they look at it again
since i was deferred is it most likely i will be rejected?
anything i can do to increase chances?

everything in by october 24th... called michigan today said they havent even looked at my application... guess ill be waiting until the 21st of december...

We speculated before on the threads that U Of M's "EARLY ACTION" is really just a good idea for kids that are in the top 25% of the applicant pool. U of M wants to "get them on the U of M team before they send out their RD applications. The average applicant or the borderline applicant (and I speculate there ARE THOUSANDS) get deferrred, I assume they must have a formula. Worse than that. Common sense tells me, that the average applicant is better off applying AFTER the EA Decision date, because mentally the adcoms start afresh looking at the incoming applications. IF two kids apply with identical stats, EC's, whatever... and one sends their average (from U of M standpoint) app in October and gets put in the "deferred" pile, and the other send in the last week of December and maybe gets read in january February...will the adcom be more likely to accept the applicant fresh in his mind....or the similar application he read 4 months earlier?

That said. It appears from postings (although there's another couple release dates) that no OOS kid has been accepted with less than a 3.7 or 2100-2200 SAT's. STill there are thousands of spots that HAVE TO BE FILLED under that, even if just a bit under that???? But is it fair to assume that a big majority of those lower stats spots are filled with in state applicants???

I'd give anything to be a fly on the wall...

hmm Salem I was accepted OOS with 3.5 and 2110, so they do look at more than just GPA+SAT's

"IF two kids apply with identical stats, EC's, whatever... and one sends their average (from U of M standpoint) app in October and gets put in the "deferred" pile, and the other send in the last week of December and maybe gets read in january February...will the adcom be more likely to accept the applicant fresh in his mind....or the similar application he read 4 months earlier?"

My guess would be the one who has NOT yet been deferred, bc deferred applicants are usually admitted only if spots open up, or if their coursework, scores, etc. improve.

I, for one, consider myself avg. applicant. I KNOW some of you will say "yeah, but you had a 3.97 uw", but please remember I was an OOS student with only the avg. ACTs (29) and below avg. SATs (1940) applying. Yes, I AM one of those people who suck at standardized testing lol. And remember that 28% of the admitted class had a 4.0 GPA last year, so I wasn't even in the top 25% of that category. My essays were very strong and extremely professional/passionate, however, which I KNOW made a difference. I really don't think they have a cutoff for ER, I think they just admit the best candidates. I had a very demanding course load, and had maintained an excellent class rank and GPA, while getting strong enough test scores, so they decided I would be a good fit. So, in my case, being the "avg." applicant and applying early didn't hurt. If I would have applied in Feb., a majority of the spots would have been filled, and I would be competing with the majority for the minority, as they say.

Ah, I see dong proved my point as well lol.

vc08, i am suspecting you had a 4.0 UM GPA?

no, read the beginning of my 3rd paragraph. actually, read the paragraph in its entirety, i think i make a valid point.

My neighbor got accepted a few weeks ago with a 1930 SAT, they are alum though if that matters

im OOS, 4.0 unweighted, and 33ACT. i sent my app late/middle nov. what do you think?

you will probably hear after december 21st.

So I'm from Alabama and I applied 10/29 although the UM website says app. complete on 10/31 (and it also said my teacher/counselor recs were received on 11/1 even though i know for sure they were submitted about a week earlier)....anyway I still haven't heard. I'm hoping those rec dates won't kick me out of the ED pool.....

stats:

Applying to CoE
ACT:30
UM GPA: 3.63
Essays: best I've ever written
Recs: excellent teacher wrote one
EC's: 9 years of soccer, a bunch of clubs, foreign exchange trip to Germany, some other stuff

I'm really hoping that me being from Alabama will help out alot. Also since I'm applying to the CoE...maybe there'll be less competition? Idk UM is my top choice and I visited in October I really hope I get in....

I'm thinking deferral, GPA is well below avg. of 3.8, and as you will see by searching through these posts, if they are gonna defer someone with a 2340 and a 3.4, they have no problem doing the same to someone with a lower score but only slightly higher GPA. ECs are very average, and everyone says their essays are amazing. Engineering is a self-selecting pool, so even though they admit a higher %, it is just as, if not more, competitive. Maybe Alabama will help a lot, I really don't know how much weight that will pull. good luck though, and go blue!

umich is so random... my friend who sent his stuff in a week after the deadline heard back last week (accepted) and i haven't heard diddly squat even though my gpa, sats, and extracurriculars are stronger (and i got my stuff in around the same time.) :(

happy for him regardless though...shows you you dont have to apply early response to hear back that quickly!
