Decision thread-Fall 2010 freshman w/ scores and grades

kaylala-
Yea, i guess that’s a good idea, less than a month left before I get my decision! I’ll keep you guys posted whether or not I get accepted, and if they do reject me, how would I address them to reevaluate my application? On my personal essay I made sure to put down my background of me attending a German school for 8 years and barely spoke English until my freshman year where i decided to join an american high school. At German universities they take time to evaluate every single person (personally) that applies, but I understand with the mass amount of applications most U.S colleges receive would make it extremely difficult.
Keep your fingers crossed for me, I won’t give up =D

ohitzdom-
well i just emailed someone from the honors college and they reevaluated it… but then there have been other times when i emailed admissions offices and i swear my emails were only sent to their spam folders :stuck_out_tongue: haha. so i don’t know, maybe call the admissions office and ask to speak to an admissions representative? it’s intimidating but they’re friendly  like you said, i’d wait for when and IF you get rejected before you call. explain to them exactly what you’ve explained to us! i think it’s really good that you included all that in your personal essay – i think they will ABSOLUTELY take that into consideration, so maybe you won’t even need to make that phone call/email! my fingers are crossed! let us know when you get any news!

Kaylala - when you say they reevaluated it- does that mean that you are now accepted, or still waiting for a decision? Also what are your stats, and who did you contact? Son has still not heard anything - not a good sign.

anyone get a phone call last night? - saw DS had one at 5:15CST but noone was here…

I wasnt seriously considering USC until I just recently got in so now Im regretting not applying to the honors program. Is it too late to do that? Do they make exceptions?

Accepted:

New York
95.02 avg (idk about GPA)
1290/1890 on the SATs

Yes, it’s too late. You can apply for admission for second semester or sophomore year though once you get here.

does that look any worse when applying to graduate school? does it effect the degree with which you graduate? as in graduating with an honors degree or soemthing, would that only be possible if you are a honor student for all eight semesters?

No one will be able to tell when you entered the Honors College. The advising staff works with you to catch up on requirements in order to graduate with an honors degree.

ALEX13MOM–
well just to be clear, i was using an example from an other college that i was accepted to, so it wasn’t for usc. however i still think it would be worth it to do what i did with the other university! i applied to umass amherst early action and was accepted, but i wasn’t invited to the honors program. unlike usc, at umass you don’t need to fill out a separate application to be considered for honors - everyone is considered. when i wasn’t invited, i contacted someone in the honors college asking them to take another look at my application because being in the honors program would make umass my #1 choice. the person i emailed then forwarded my email to whoever deals with stuff like that. a couple weeks ago i got a letter saying i was accepted!

these are my stats too, since you were wondering  don’t know if it’s still relevant or not but i’ll share
gpa: 5.1/6.0 which is an a-
sat: 1310/1600, 2110/2400
sat 2s: 670 literature and 670 math
lots of extracurriculars… dance team, volunteering, tutoring, cultural and foreign language clubs

as for the south carolina honors college, hang tight! i applied to that as well and have not heard anything yet either… your son isn’t alone! and from what i have read, the decisions for that are released on a rolling basis based on when you have applied (not based on accept/reject). i applied to south carolina the day the application was due, so i’m expecting my decision for honors in the very last batch haha… very anxious as well! anyways best of luck, hope i have helped a little bit!

Accepted to the College of Arts and Sciences and Honor’s college a while ago, from New York
GPA: around 94 out of 100
SATs: CR 740 M 710 W 750

Applied on a whim the week before Honor’s applications were due and had to really scramble to get it in before my senior trip that weekend, but it’s definitely one of my top choices right now.

marbearrr
where in NY are you? S is a senior in the Honors College, from Long Island.Has had no trouble adjusting if that was worrying you…

I’m from Rochester. Yeah I have been worrying a little just because I haven’t spent much time in the south, and I’m fairly liberal as far as politics are concerned, so that’s good to know!

Carolina actually seems like it has a fairly high percentage of “yankees,” as far as SEC schools go. I spend a lot of time on the U of Tennessee campus and have rarely met anyone from outside TN, GA, NC, SC, MS, etc. On my 2 or 3 visits to Carolina I’ve met several New Yorkers, New Englanders, etc. Maybe it will be a refreshing change of pace, ha.

ANYWAY, as far as decisions go.

From TN, accepted, waitlisted to Honors.
ACT- 34
SAT- 1470 or 2190
GPA- 3.7 W
ECs include Student Senate, Boys State, varsity and club swimming, and several officer positions

Right now it’s looking like I’m Columbia-bound, but only because Clemson shafted me (but don’t tell anyone that).

accepted
30 act
3.7 gpa
moore school of business
scholarship !
nj

accepted. college of mass comm & info sciences…
3.65 gpa
1330/1960
got the mckissick, i’m out of state so that means ill save over $66,000 which is prettyyy sweet =]

anyone else also get into clemson? im going to visit both schools. i know they hate each other but it’s gonna be a rough decision especially if clemson gives me any money.

Accepted. Out of State-New Jersey
GPA 3.8
SAT 1330 (R 640 M 690 W 710)
International Studies/Spanish
McKissick…yea!

Daughter was also accepted at Clemson, but we are not holding out much hope for an OOS tuition waiver as she missed the 1350 cut off. We probably won’t even visit because I don’t want her to fall in love with a school we can’t afford!

Clemson has a beautiful campus with a golf course and a lake. I thought it was one of the nicer campuses we visited but at the same time it didn’t feel like other “Southern” schools because it has an eclectic mix of architecture. We visited on a Saturday and the campus was dead…even the student union and student stores were closed. We also had the worst tour guide of any campus we visited on that trip which I know didn’t help things.

When we visited D was immediately turned off by how small the town was and she also didn’t like the fact that there were no fraternity or sorority houses, just dorms.

The school is in a really small, very rural town about 45 minutes from Greenville. D was concerned that she would feel very isolated especially when coming from Dallas and with no car freshman year.

Your daughter is wise beyond her years. If you’re used to an urban or metropolitan suburban environment, going to school at some out of the way place like Clemson could be a very difficult adjustment.

DD received the big envelope today. While she was excited (and rather surprised), she will not attend as she has changed her major to one that USC does not offer. So the moment was a mix of excitement and disappointment.

njmom-i am in that EXACT same situation.
i hope i know when i visit the schools. because i have no clue what i’m going to do. where i want to go changes from day to day…
