Of course a decision has to be made in a shy two weeks. We have narrowed it down to only a few prospects. My D is fairly certain that she wants to study comp sci, but also is very interested in continuing to study piano and Japanese.

Factors: fields of study mentioned above; significant merit from Case (30K/yr.); no real interest in graduate school - wants to be in position to get internships and ultimately offers of employment

Maybe to help further the conversation - she also got into Berkeley, but scale of the place as well as being OOS seems to make it less compelling. People seemed pretty happy at Cornell, and consensus is that CS students get a lot of interesting employment opportunities. Have seen fewer testimonials about recruiting at Case Western.

OP:
Did your D visit Cornell? I’m guessing that you are from the east coast and weather is not a factor for your D.

My D is also having a hardtime choosing between Cornell and UCLA. We are from Cali so Cornell is twice more expensive than UCLA. She was also accepted at Berkeley and Case. We attended Cornell Days and she had a positive experience. She’s considering Cornell now, more than before we made the visit.

Also we attended a local Cornell Network club reception in our area. It was nice to know that even in area, thousands of miles away from Cornell, the alumni network is very active and supportive.

Case is extremely respectable with a lot of STEM fields, it was on my list as well, but since graduate school is not on the horizon, I say go with Cornell if the cost can be swung.

Thanks for the response. We are indeed east coast. Also attended Women in Engineering weekend and also received a wonderful impression of the institution.

Your daughter would prefer UCLA to Berkeley ? Most seems to think UCB is better at CS, if for no other reason because of proximity to Silicon Valley.

It seems like Case is really not in contention, though ?

I agree that Case is well respected, and if cost is an issue it is a perfectly find choice for CS students. The smartest math/CS kid at my D’s high school got excellent merit money from Case last year and is now happily attending.

For some reason she doesn’t like Berkeley the school and the surrounding area. There’s a perceived cut-throat, liberal/hippie stereo type of the school. Also she fell in love with a major @UCLA (Linguistics and Computer Science). She doesn’t want to be a hard-core CS/programmer. She wants to be in the middle. So if she will attend Cornell, she will major in Information Science with probably a minor in Cognitive Science. At Cornell, CS, IS and Statisitics all belong to one umbrella unit (Computing and Information Science: http://infosci.cornell.edu/academics/degrees/ba-college-arts-sciences ) and have their home at the new modern Gates Hall (https://blogs.cornell.edu/gateshall/) So if both of our Ds decide to attend Cornell, there’s a big chance that they will meet each other.

And you are right she’s not considering Case anymore. So I can’t really help you on your Case vs Cornell. But I’m guessing that Cornell is more expensive for your D compared to Case, so in that regards I can relate. We are full pay at Cornell so right now money and weather is a big factor.

You are right as well, as we received no aid from Cornell. So at least on that basis, we are in a similar situation (the weather is another story entirely).

My D is going to Cornell. We made our deposit few days ago. She really connected to the school and to the pre-froshies and current students the she met during Cornell Days. She also thinks that there are more resources that can support her at Cornell compared to UCLA. Now that she’s committed, I’m kinda scared that Cornell will eat her alive both socially and academically. We are full pay, but not rich, so I’ve warned her that she’ll be in a tight budget and will not be able to afford Vineyard Vines and lilly pulitzer like most of her classmates will. But me and my wife have been talking to Cornell alumni and they re-aasured us that our daughter will be fine. How about your D?

Also you need to book hotel ASAP for move-in day. Ithaca hotels are mostly sold out or the remaining ones are highly overpriced. We book a hotel in Cortland (about 20 miles from Ithaca). good luck!
