Decision time -- EE - ASU vs UCI vs UCSD

Decision time: Got admits for the EE program from ASU, UCI and UCSD

Need to select in a few weeks. Looking for help in this forum from EE Undergraduates at these schools.

I am from California but all three are going to cost me the same since I have Scholarship fro ASU. I just need input on these programs - Internship and career opportunities, Competitiveness( I like to learn, but that is different from competing for Grade among high achievers) , level of research funding, dorms, food etc. I have visited all three cities often so I know about the weather etc, and I am convinced campus life at ASU is probably more exciting than the two UC campuses.

My area of interest in EE is -- Semiconductors, VLSI, signal processing -- prefer to apply these to health\medical\bio field. I may also work on my pre-med courses but that depends on how I handle the work load in EE in my first two years.

I am certainly aware of how these schools are rated in EE, but I am looking for other valuable input that provides information beyond ratings provided by US news - Finally I hope someone can comment on the Pros and Cons of Quarter vs semester system especially for engineering programs.

I would say that UCSD is the best academically, but all of them are decent.

This is based on graduate rankings + personal opinion.

I can’t speak for ASU or UCI, but as a current EE major at UCSD, i can tell you about UCSD abundant opportunities.

First off, it’s a great learning environment. You’re surrounded by intelligent people, and not as cut throat as other top tier schools. So it’s safe to say that the level of competitiveness here is meant to build you up and not so much weed people out.

Second, there’s plenty of internship/jobs right outside and within campus. There’s Scripps Institute of Oceanography, which is right next to the beach and UCSD. There’s also plenty of start-up companies here as well. Just take a gander at these links of the numerous job positions: [UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering](http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/student/student_prof/prof_intern/).
You can also choose to work inside UCSD at the library, bookstore, dining halls, etc:
https://ucsd-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?ss=applied&s=jobs&cck=1&au=&ck=

And sometimes, getting research positions from professors is as easy as asking for candy (literally).

But, i must admit the social life is pretty dull. Though that’s nothing if you like exploring the enormous campus and city (via public transit shuttle) and are open to the various organizations.

Overall, UCSD’s a great place to learn and work, without sacrificing the fun aspect.

Thanks for your response regarding the UCSD program and the link to the internship postings.

IF you don’t mind can you respond to whatever you can to this posting (pasted below) I posted in some other forum ( but never got a response)

Can anyone comment about this program – How rigorous is it? How many freshman drop out of this program after a year and change major? What are the chances of finishing in four years? How are the profs - are they accessible and focus on teaching? What are the internship opportunities outside of Telecom\wireless industry. Current freshman - can you comment on your GPA now that you have almost done with the first year, how are you adapting to the program.

Do big semiconductor giants like --Motorola, Intel, AMD, TI, Altera, etc recruit on campus or is it strictly Bio-med, telecom companies. If I survive the first two years I want to specialize in one of these following areas – VLSI, mixed signal circuits, computer engineering. Is the EE dept strong in that area with industry connections to hardware\semiconductor companies.?

Where can I get of list of companies that recruit regularly from UCSD campus.
