this forum has been extremely helpful the last 2 years as my D did her search. after 12 college visits & apps we are down to decision time with 2 - UM and U South Carolina. great scholarships at both, honors college at SC. tough choice. would love to hear any last input from others.
D was double math and religion. She enjoyed the math and has enjoyed getting to know the faculty. Freshman honors college advisor suggested her discrete teacher and she liked him a lot and he became her advisor. He has been great about suggesting the best professor for several courses. Definitely, with only one exception, the honors sections have had the best professors. Even non-honors upper level classes have been small. Largest class around 35 that was 500 level class that several majors had as requirement.
She is doing paid research with one professor that she’s never had for a class and would have presented at a conference but was out of the country for the summer. Another professor continually emails her with suggestions for summer programs (she is attending a Carnegie Mellon session this summer thanks to her). Most of the math professors know her. Another one that she hasn’t taken from is a second reader on her Senior Thesis. She is pulling math into religion for grad school so not really applied math person although technically with the math electives she picked, she fulfilled those requirements. There are additional math department scholarships available after freshman year - she got one or two.
I was raised in warm weather states but careers opportunities took us north to be blanketed with snow for 20 years. Anything U with an M means cold – Massachusetts, Montana, Maine, Michigan. (Mississippi would never be UM only Ole Miss and Missouri is always Mizzou!) No brainer – go with the warmer weather!! That said, my D went through the same long college search. Scholarship money and the opportunity to participate in a smaller college within a larger university setting heavily factored in her decision that she made on April 29 of her senior year. She has made a variety of friends, feels academically challenged, and stretched herself in trying new activities. All stuff parents would hope their darlings would get out of college. USC has met expectations. Good luck with the decision…17 days to go…
