decision time!

Well, she got the call she was waiting for - the coach offered her a partial scholarship.

She of course wants to sign up right now.

We want to make sure she will not be precluded from merit aid (which could be more) by agreeing to this.

So this is going to be a challenging couple of days.

She will go no matter what - but this is the part I don't like! Are you supposed to negotiate or do you assume their first offer will be their best and only?

Argh!! Very excited, though. She had a great time at this school over the weekend.

Congrats to your daughter!!! Very exciting!

We did not negotiate our need based aid last year and I wish we had at least tried. The school he chose later announced they would match all other Ivies and he had a better offer from another.

Good luck with your decision!

That is great news wilberry228! Congrats to you and your daughter. I like your statement that she will go no matter what…it must be her dream school!

Kate in FL - I think I know which school you are talking about. We may have sons in the same class there. I was also wondering if the FA could be retroactively negotiated as well with that new policy. ;-)

Thanks!

fenway - dream school … it was not at first … but it is after this past weekend. It was always high on the radar because we had a great unofficial visit there in the summer, and they were very low key and friendly.

This isn’t need-based aid we would be waiting on,though. It’s merit aid, and comes out in December with the acceptances, I believe.

And wouldn’t you know, she got a call from the coach at the school she applied to with the free application, just tonight! I think she would get more athletic AND academic money there … although it’s not even a school she thought of until they sent her the free application. She fits right in with their team based on stats, as far as I can tell.

Oh well…fingers crossed. She’s at practice now. We’ll see what words of wisdom her coach has for her.

I am so happy for your daughter, and for you! It sounds like a great fit for her. I would talk to the coach about the academic vs. athletic scholarship money. He may be able to shed some light as to how it is handled at that particular school. He also may be able to give you an idea of what to expect in academic money. Congrats again!

Thanks fishy! He told her he has nothing to do with the merit. I get the feeling he does what he does. This is not a micromanaging coach, but we have found him just to be honest. The main problem here is that she is managing the dealings. It’s killing us!!

Hope all is still going well for your daughter, she has a lot going on lately too :)

Congratulations Wilberry! Sounds like your D has found a great fit! It makes sense for her to handle details with the coach, but as the paying parent I think it’s fine for you to handle the details with the financial office at the school. Best of luck in getting the last wrinkles ironed out!

Congratulations to wilberry and D! I agree with runners2, be involved with the financial part of it. Your D must be on cloud 9! She will need you to help her with the $ details.

Wait in a minute … I thought You and I will be cashing our pay checks till our 90’s.
What’s up with that?

Congratulations to You and Your D. I am really happy to hear the news.

cc, don’t count me off the check cashing line yet!

The offer made so far may mean canned corn and ground beef for those of us left in the house! We have to hope for some more aid when the acceptance letter comes …

Thanks, though … she’ll call them back tomorrow and probably just accept with her coach there too - I’ll let you know!

wilberry, we’ll have to start a thread on “budget meals” soon! Full ride or partial, it still costs $$ to send a kid through college! Every bit helps!

Congratulations wilberry and DD! Best of luck with the merit aid angle–wise advice above about inserting yourself onto the radar of the FA & merit aid office.

(And really, who doesn’t love mac and cheese once a week for four short years?)
