Decisions 09

Has any one heard back from Syracuse yet?

Don’t know if this is still the schedule, but when my son auditioned in early January, they said we wouldn’t hear anything until the middle to end of March.

Syracuse does not give out admissions decisions until all auditions are complete and then the admissions office reviews the candidates that the MT program is interested in and the notifications come out around mid March. Therefore, nobody in the Regular Decision round could have heard back yet.

Last year (2008), my D heard back in mid-March – I recall around the 12th or 13th – with an acceptance email followed up a few days later with an acceptance packet in the mail. There seemed to be a first round of acceptances at that time. Then, it appeared as though additional acceptances came out over the next 2 weeks (last 2 weeks of March) in subsequent rounds.

A good friend of my D got his acceptance to MT last week…she thinks it was by snail mail but not certain.

When my daughter auditioned in January 2007, decisions came out in waves starting about now and going through the end of March. There seemed to be 3 waves with acceptances and rejections in all 3 waves, so don’t panic and assume the "worst if you haven’t heard anything while others have.

While they may come out in waves, they usually do not start in February. Perhaps Syracuse is doing something different this year; I do not know.

In 2005, when my D was accepted, she first got a phone call and then the snail mail acceptance letter is dated March 11. As well, at the presentation, we were told that decisions would come out in March.

Then, while CC is not the definitive source of information since not all MT applicants post here, LOL…in looking back at the acceptance threads on CC’s MT Forum, in 2007, the first acceptance for Syracuse was posted on March 9. In 2008, the first was posted on March 14.

Yes, I would like to echo what Michael said. Do not fear the worst if you begin seeing acceptances on CC. It doesn’t mean you/your student didn’t get in. I recall last year seeing acceptances coming through (or at least being reported on CC) much later in the month. Also, I went back a few years on CC at that time and saw that quite a few acceptances came in through very late March. Plus, there are waiting lists and students do come off those lists and get an offer of admission!

I have a hunch (and this is purely speculation and my own opinion) that boys will fare well in class of 2013 admissions for SU at least on the MT side. The MT class of 2012 has very few boys. Again, this is purely a guess on my part. Also, I heard they are looking for strong dancers this time.

soozie, by “about now” I meant starting with the first week in March (if anyone can believe it, it is February 28th already!). If my memory is right, I recall acceptances to Syracuse being reported on CC in 2007 during the first week in March (Edit: just checked the old thread, it was 3/9/07); my daughter didn’t receive her acceptance until March 19 and she was in what appeared to be the third wave. In the interim there seemed to be 2 earlier waves of acceptances and rejections reported which caused us to be concerned that rejections were more likely the longer it took to hear, which turned out not to be the case.

Michael, I remember your D’s year vividly because the “waves” of notifications caused a lot of concern and confusion! I just don’t recall any kids finding out before the second week of March any of the past few years. I realize that someone above said a friend has heard but that would be different than any observations in the past, as well as I think they tell the kids “March”.

I prefer the schools that just tell everyone at ONE time one way or the other. Many selective colleges (not MT) do it that way around April 1. Then, there is no guessing what it means if you have heard or not heard, etc. etc.

I think my only concern with this college is that it’s so expensive. God willing I were to get into Syracuse, does any one know how they are with scholarships? Do they normally give out scholarships to all their acceptances? Also, how generous are they when giving out scholarships? It’s the most beautiful school I think I’ve ever seen, it’s just so expensive. Also, I’m wondering if there is anything to do up in Syracuse besides going to partys or going to class.

vickycampa – My D is a junior at Syracuse. Finding something to do is definitely not an issue! The BFA MT program keeps her so busy that she has very little down time. There are plenty of activities available on campus – but she has been able to participate in very little outside of the theater department.

Yes, SU offers some very good financial aid. If you have specific questions about that or other questions about the department, feel free to PM me.

any new word on acceptances into Syracuse?

I know 3 students who auditioned/applied, 2 MTs and 1 Acting. None have heard as of tonight.

I doubt anyone has heard yet.

I thought they said around the 15th of March letters would be mailed.

I still stand by my earlier statement that my D’s male friend was accepted to MT…learned today that he has already given his intent to enroll. Maybe he was early action?

MamaBear, I don’t know when your D’s friend got his news but Syracuse does have Early Decision.

In fact, if he gave his intent to enroll, it makes me think he is not waiting for other school results. In fact, if he got in under ED, he would have to pull his candidacy from other schools. Did he audition all winter? That would be a sign as to whether he did or did not apply ED. However, conceivably, someone in the ED round at a college can be deferred until RD, but in that case, he would not yet have his results.

I do not believe people have heard yet from Syracuse in the RD round.

(However, ya never know from year to year if a school changes things…such as informing an outstanding candidate early or some such…every school has a different system of notification…but Syracuse’s has been in batches in mid March for several years now)

I know of a very talented girl who auditioned for Syracuse’s MT program a few years ago, and who received a telephone call just weeks after her audition to let her know that she was accepted into SU’s BFA MT program and how badly SU wanted her. The phone call definitely came before official letters were sent.

I believe this girl also applied to other BFA MT programs that made decisions on a rolling basis, and she had some nice scholarship offers from those other schools. It’s my understanding that SU just wanted to throw their hat in the ring before she committed to another BFA MT program.

Perhaps this is what happened to the friend of MamaBear’s daughter and it may explain why he was notified of his acceptance before anyone else. Doesn’t SU ask students to disclose what other schools they’ve applied to? Perhaps this is why …

Otherwise, as SoozieVT said, I’m quite sure that SU does not have an ED option for any of its BFA programs.

Brown Eyes…

Two things…I believe that Syracuse does have ED as an option for the BFA…where the student would then be notified of the admissions decision in December and it would be BINDING.

Second, my own daughter was admitted to Syracuse for the BFA in MT four years ago. She first learned of her acceptance by phone, before the official mailing. Her acceptance letter is dated March 11 (I just checked). I can’t recall the date of the phone call, only that it was before March 8. I just remember being home when she received the call, and her getting off the phone and telling me she was accepted to Syracuse and the faculty member called her. I know I left on a trip on March 8 and when I returned on the 13th, my D was in a serious car crash and landed in intensive care and was in the hospital a long while (got some acceptances in the hospital, including the Syracuse packet). So, I know the call was before I left and before she landed in the hospital. Thus, it is conceivable that some candidates are called before the letters go out. But I feel that still happens in March. I bet things will get going with Syracuse very soon.
